Radeon 8500 and Unreal Tournament

Here's the deal. I recently got a retail radeon 8500 128meg. I had problems(a recent post of mine) at first, but then I formatted and voila! errors gone.
But now, when I load Unreal Tournament (not 2003), it hangs with a blank screen for about 20 seconds after the splash screen. My old card (S3 Savage4) never did this. It'll also hang(mouse freezes) if I click the button in the top right corner to go back to windows. When I 'quit' the game, it goes right to windows, but the music plays for 15 seconds or so.

What's going on??

Thanks

EDIT: using catalyst 2.5 driver and control panel

EDIT: must be the drivers. uninstalled them and then tested it with M$ driver. did not hang while loading or while going back to windows... thanks everyone! :)

Hmm, I don't know what is up with yours, but I have a Radeon 8500 LE running at retail speeds and UT runs fine on my machine.

I'm using the Catalyst 2.5 drivers by the way.

hmm...3.0 is beta for radeon 8500. seems that people have had problems.
anything else I can try?

Since you already have problems, you might as well try it along with DirectX9. Just might fix it.

You may have to uninstall then re-install UT (plus patches).

I think I had to do that when I went from a GTS Pro to the 8500.

Thanks! :)

it's the simple things I don't think of...

tenoc: you mention patches. I know of the 436 patch...are the other important ones?

Were you using the Metal API as your video type?

You should start UT in Safe Mode, then select change video in the window that pops up, then seled Direct3D.

I've been using D3D. I tried OpenGL. It didn't give me the hangs, but it didn't seem to run as well...

try opengl with the high rez texture pack on CD2 (assuming you have the GOTY edition) and the updated opengl kernel (this is found on the epic megagames site). you should get grand performance.

Me too, I'm running at 275/275, and this game looks awesome to me!

The Catalyst 2.5s caused a black screen/lockup for me in UT running under OpenGL. The Catalyst 3.0s have fixed this issue.
