I wonder how low they'll have to keep the clocks to keep it under 300W. Gonna be hard for AMD to beat Nvidia this round with the dual GPU.

Worry?,and ignore you?.chill out dude and amuse me some more:)

GTX687.5 will come out in September. It will be GK104 with GK107 soldered onto the side of it. The dual version will be called gtx699.99 and will come with a unicorn!

This of course will all come after Nvidia gets the gtx475 out.

Unless they can sort out the obvious microstutter issues with eyefinity setups I'm staying far away from this card.

Nvidia made it clear that GK110 will not see the light of day in 2012 as a geforce product unless they absolutely have to, which is all but guaranteed NOT to happen since Sea Islands is 100% confirmed for 2013.

Probably right on target:

The Nvidia executives we talked with raised the possibility of a GK110-based GeForce being released this year only if necessary to counter some move by rival AMD. That almost certainly means that any GK110-based GeForce to hit the market in 2012 would come in extremely limited quantities.

There are different version in the 7970... the first release had 2 versions with 2 different voltages. The one tested with higher power consumption than a mature 6970 has a voltage of 1.17V.

Currently there are 7970 which run at 1.05V

People have undervolted their card to sub 150W levels without touching the clocks...

AMD has absolutely no problem staying below 300W if they want to... especially if they limit it to 300W TDP by powertune... (since in gaming the 7970 is extremely close to the 680... with the higher voltages...)

What AMD will fabricate however is up to them... but with the a little bit of binning 2*1GHz 7970 under 300W isn't impossible.

Anyone notice the chip in the middle has an ATI logo?

Also wrong number of memory chips for a 384bit mem bus.

Looks like a fake image to me.

There are many ways AMD could vary price, performance, cost, availability, power consumption, and cooling. They could almost certainly create a card that consumed less power than GTX 690 with higher performance. Obviously they wouldn't be able to make very many of them, and it would carry a prohibitively steep price tag.

Noone can say for certain what road AMD will take, but I can't see them shipping at below 925MHz. If you're comparing GTX 690 power consumption to 2x 7970 in CF you either aren't up to date or you're being dishonest. 7970 launched at conservative clocks and voltages, and it's pretty common knowledge that the process has been improving.

The fact that AMD is launching the 7990 *after* Nvidia launched GTX 690 despite the fact that they've been producing 28nm products for far longer leads me to one of two possibilities:

1. AMD dropped that ball again, or
2. AMD is planning something special. Perhaps even a new stepping?

3. AMD doesn't bother announcing products it can't keep in stock.

That GTX 690? Even at an insane $999, it still isn't in stock at newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...tx+690&x=0&y=0

It doesn't matter how powerful a video card is if a customer can't buy it. If you're building a new computer and need a graphics card RIGHT NOW, you can't wait 2 months for a 10% better GTX680 or even splurge for the dual GPU GTX 690.

AMD should just launch a 7890 with 2x 7870 GPUs for $600. It would be the fastest thing around, but it would make a lot more sense. The 4850X2 was an extremely popular card even though it was pretty rare.

You are probably right that the process has improved. However, AMD still has not officially launched 2nd revision HD7970s. Where is that new stepping that's been rumored? Until that happens, we have HD7970 CF power consumption to work with. Of course HD7990 will have lower power since they can bin the best possible chips. However, GTX690 has full pretty much HD7970 CF performance right now. I also agree with some other sentiments that if HD7990 is for sale, it's already a winner in some respect since 690 is OOS. Even if GTX690 was bazillion times faster, it's not really available for sale.

Regardless, most of these cards are for a very limited market niche and brand positioning. GTX670 SLI for $800 makes more sense for most people.

I think most people would care more if AMD launched HD7980 or something with 1.15-1.2ghz clocks. That would actually benefit a lot more people than some halo $850+ dual-GPU cards.

Someone needs to come out with a 1200 core 7970

Dec 31, 2011 - Atomic cards with 1335mhz clocks and Toxic cards with 1125mhz clocks from the factory.

Almost end of May, still nothing. :'(

The powercolor vortex 2 is 1100 stock:

Although its too expensive. I still don't understand why AMD didn't release 1.5gb versions at a much better pricepoint.
lol, please not the 1.5gb debate again. a 1.5gb 7970 would be a stupid and very short sided card. gamers can already get close to and even exceed 1.5 in some games now especially with mods so why on earth would they gimp a top of the line card?

You've said this all before. 1.5gb didn't seem to hurt the GTX 580, which generally did fine in all single screen resolutions. Besides which, customers could have a choice. A 350$ 1.5gb 7970 at 1100mhz sounds pretty good to me. I'm fairly confident such a product would sell pretty well.

But it won't happen so the discussion is moot, your opinion is noted

It would be a great card @ 379$ price point. But as we have beaten this to death in another thread I won't start afresh :D

yes and even a 768mb would sell cause some people look at price instead of using common sense. the gtx580 is getting a little bit dated and an oced 7970 can run much higher settings that use more vram. some games can already get close 1.5 gb of vram use with a 7970 level of card. also there are many mods out there for some games that will obliterate 1.5 gb of vram at 1920x1080/1200 never mind 2560x1600. a 1.5gb 7970 would be a regrettable purchase at this point for many.

In BF3 with ultra and msaa kills the 580s fps. I think the 79xx series is perfect with 3gb vram

At 1920x1080 on ultra with 4x msaa bf3 uses 1586mb of vram
