Radeon 64MB and Diablo 2 frame rates

This been bugging me for a while now but finally remembered/decided to post it.

Anyone know of a way to increase diablo 2 frame rates if using D3D and a Radeon 64MB card?

My old banshee 16MB PCI gave me rates in excess of 60+ fps at times on my old celery 433 machine. As soon as I popped in my radeon, the fps dropped below 30. I thought maybe cpu use was the culprit here but it still remains sh*tty even on my 1.2 ghz athlon.

Any ideas?

thanks.

How were you getting 60fps in D2? Are you refering to multiplayer? In single player, the frame rate is locked at 25-30fps. (I forget the exact fps.) In multiplayer it is unlocked. I'm not quite sure why Blizzard has it set up this way. Did you try and run the video test program to see available video modes after installing the radeon?

Yep

I always play multi player (battle.net US West). I tried the video test, beta drivers, installing/reinstalling dx old and new versions but to no avail. The worst part, is that stupid direct draw (2D) gives higher frame rates (not by much) but hardware accelerated d3d is worse, tho the picture quality is better in d3d.

ahh if only you could use OpenGL in D2 or if ATI licenses glide from 3dfx before they went belly up

I'm curious about what the fps bottle neck is in D2, cpu or vid. I have a zookeeper necro, and frame rates of 13-15 are common. I'll be getting an Athlon 4 whenever they come out for desktop (upgrading from 900mhz) and I'm wondering if I'll get an increase, or if the frame rates are already at the limit of the video hardware. (Geforce 2 pro in my case).

The bottle neck is like 25 fps single player but no bottle neck multi player.

Really p*sses me off, my old banshee gave me sweet frame rates (50+ every time) but my Radeon 64MB DDR is slower than ralph wiggum at times on my 1.2 ghz

Speaking of Glide, didnt 3dfx make it open source? And it is my understanding that Nividia did not purchase Glide.

Richleader, trust me, on my old celeron 600 machine with 512MB RAM I got 55-60 + FPS *at least* with my Diamond Monster fusion banshee 16MB PCI card. Battle.net (multiplayer) of course. With my Radeon on the other hand, i rarely go over 30.

Somewhat discomforting if you ask me, considering the Radeon humiliates the bansh*t in just about every other game/program that requires 3D accel.

Slightly better rates in 2d without perspective (about 3-6 fps) improvement but thats kind of a waste considering the image quality difference between direct blob and any 3d mode.

wish I had still kept my banshee, oh well, hope they fix this with the expansion.

"Slightly better rates in 2d without perspective (about 3-6 fps) improvement but thats kind of a waste considering the image quality difference between direct blob and any 3d mode."

What exactly do you mean by this?

Have you or haven't you tried direct draw instead of direct3d mode?

Besides, who actually plays using perspective? PK bait? 😛

Yes I have tried direct draw (which i referred to as direct blob because of obvious image quality reasons).

And no, it did not make a significant improvement.

Third, I have'nt worked on anything other lately than building a PK'er barb and just some trades and stuff.

Hmm that's weird. I don't remember what I got on my banshee and celeron 550 but I don't think it runs any faster on my 1.3ghz tbird and radeon. Last time I checked, my fps were around 50-60. But the game runs internally at 25fps no matter if you are packing 100fps or 10fps.

I don't know what the bottleneck is for D2. On my 550, 128mb ram, banshee, I would always get a big slow down when you go talk to Tyrael after beating Duriel in the chamber. Yet with my current system (see sig), I still get the slowdown. Hmph.

Cool. The thing that bothers me tho is that the game gets real choppy and runs in 'blocks' with my radeon. eg as soon as I whirlwind a bunch of worms/monsters in RoF, it gets horribly choppy at the start and end of the WW. I checked that with my banshee just before I sold it 3-4 weeks back, and it ran sooooooooo sweet. It's just so annoying that a card that costs 5 times + as much performs at 50% in a game.
