Radeon 5750 vs. Geforce 9800 GTX+

I currently have a Geforce 9800 GTX+ (512 MB). Someone I work with wants to sell me a Radeon 5770. Anyone know how much faster that would be?

Correction: 5770, not a 5750.

I think it's only slightly faster.

It does use about half the power, and offers DX11, but tbh the card is too slow for that to even matter.

I think it's a performance side grade and a decent leap in power consumption improvement, probably not worth your time with cheap 40nm products in the used market.

Erm that was the 5750, I think the 5770 is about ~15% faster than the 5750.. Unless it's free if you're looking for a performance upgrade there are a lot of great used 40nm products right now that would be of better use for you imo.

I am still using an old 17" LCD, so max res is 1280x1024. I'm trying to improve performance in Mechwarrior Online, which uses the Crytek 3 engine.

That's what I'm not sure of. It's a Pentium Dual core E6300 2.8 Ghz. Was just hoping I could get away with a few more fps without having to pay much since I am pretty strapped for cash.

Stinks - Well the 5770 is a little bit of a " Speed Increase" upgrade. Just wait until he tells you how much. Then we can help you decide if it's worth it 🙂 You may be able to find something cheaper on Craigslist?
 
Could always ask him to try it. I don't think it's any faster either.

Closest anandbench has is something like a gtx 260 vs 5750 or choose 5770 to make up for the speed bump the 260 has over the 9800gtx+(gts250)

The 9800gtx+ comes in many editions with varied clock speeds. What is yours running at?

IMO, the 5770 wouldn't be worth the hassle to upgrade. And if you go with a GPU that would give you the significant gain you really need/want, you'll most likely be looking at a CPU bottleneck.
 
it is a little bit faster, and it can be significantly faster in some games, specially if the 1GB vs 512mb is a factor.

also you can play Crysis 3 at low with the 5770, you cannot play Crysis 3 with the 9800GTX+

many games are using nearly 1GB (or at least 700 or more) at 1280x1024 here, I haven't tested a 512MB card recently to see if it really is problematic with these games/settings, but I have even seen over 1GB usage with 1280x1024 (but it's relatively rare)...

if the upgrade is "almost for free", it's something worth mentioning I think.
I'm not saying is a great upgrade, but there is definitely some gains

even something old like Far Cry 2, if you use AA you could probably notice the difference at lower res to

I thought it was just a renamed 8800GT, but it looks like it trades blows with the 4850, which means a 5770 will be no more than 25% faster.

Might be a worthwhile upgrade to get DX11 support and lower power usage, and I imagine there are a few titles which the 5770 will be significantly faster in, but by and large it's not going to be much of an upgrade.
 
Thanks for the help. I may just ask him to borrow the 5770 so I can test it and see if it makes a difference. I'd like to get a decent Core 2 Quad but it's hard to find any in the Q9000 series on Ebay or CL for under $75.
