Radeon 32MB DDR -or- Geforce2MX

This question has probably been asked before but, I'll ask again. I'm looking to upgrade from a Diamond ViperV770 TNT2 ULTRA w/ 32mb. I was thinking of either the Radeon 32MB DDR for $89 or the CardExpert Geforece 2 MX 32 SDR for $94.

I mostly do gaming (FPS/FlightSims/Strat) and alot of online stuff and reading. So basically I'm asking which one should I get? I hear the Radeon has better 2D and crisper text. But then there is Driver support and such. I friend of mine INSISTS that I get the Geforce 2 MX, but from where I'm standing, the Radeon looks better and cheaper.

Any comments, suggestions, on which card or another card? Would I see a big or noticeable improvement over my current video card?

Thanks

I might seem biased, but I recommend the Radeon because the LE seems like a really good deal once you enable HyperZ w/ reg. tweaks. Also, most can be overclocked to at least 166/183.

is the radeon le or ddr?
if its le then forget it! its slower and NO T&L
maybe you can wait a bit longer for ddr cuz I see ddr price is at a steep slide

The Radeon I was looking at is this one....ATI Radeon DDR 32MB AGP No TV/OUT OEM LE Vision Powered by the ATI RADEON?

It's the LE version, but DDR. And how do Radeons do with an overclocked proc? Do they handle the higher AGP speeds well?

radeon le = radeon minus tv out/lower clock/no hyperz,no fan. it does have t&l, and it does have ddr. its been crippled via registry, not hardware.

Ok, thanks for explaining that :)

Think I should just spend the extra cash and get a GeForce 2 GTS? I'm hoping to order a new video card within the next couple of days. Would like to know what ya'll think.

Also what about Radeons handling overclocked CPUs? I mean the higher AGP bus.

no idea on the agp, but since the radeon matches the gts, doesn't seem to be much of a reason to go for a geforce at the momment, better to buy the radeon and save your money for the good stuff coming out in the future.

That doesn't sound right at all. I was under the impression that the LE was the same as the 32 MB DDR Radeon except it was clocked at 148 MHz and Hyper-Z was disabled in Direct 3D (but could be turned back on with registry tweaks). I seriously doubt ATi would drop their T&L engine.

I don't know much about the Geforce2 in real life but I'm trying to change that.
I think the RadeonDDR is a good deal, as long as you want a plain game/DVD card and don't care about FSAA much. buy it now before hyper Z is disabled thru hardware. the image quality is good and the card won't die off like the MX at 1280x1024

oh and don't believe those that say Radeon matches the GTS

Between the Radeon 32mb DDR and the GF2MX, definately the Radeon card. It's a tougher call between the the Radeon 32mb DDR and the 32mb DDR Geforce 2 GTS. The GTS does have better performance and oc'ing the memory on the GTS will give you a much better increase in performance than oc'ing the the Radeon card.

Don't think I'm biased for/against the Radeon, or GTS either. I am currently running a 32mb DDR ATI All in Wonder Radeon card in my system. I changed from a 32mb DDR Elsa Gladiac Geforce 2 GTS card, so I've pretty much used both cards. There is a performance drop between my GTS(especially when I had my memory running @ 400mhz, core left at 200mhz) and my AIW Radeon(running @ 183/183), most notable in the higher resolutions of Q3A. The reason I switched to the AIW Radeon of course doesn't apply to this thread, because this is about the ordinary 32mb ddr Radeon card, and the reason I switched was for the extra features of the AIW card(stereo tv tuner, VIVO, Tivo like function, etc.), so it is really a tough choice.

As for the 2D on my Gladiac, it was alright at 1280x1024, and 1600x1200 on my 19" Trinitron monitor, but it looked even better after I did the rfi filter mod.:)

This has been gone over many times. The LE is a 128 bit 32 meg DDR card. It has HyperZ disabled in D3D, but is re-enabled via simple registry entry. It has a 148 MHz clock which can be raised to normal speed or higher with PowerStrip. When these 2 changes are made, it performas exactly the same as a normal Radeon 32 DDR, which is quite a bit better than an MX. It's a very good deal if you dont mind having to tweak it a little.

Radeon, hands down. I just installed the retail version of the 32mb DDR card and it really kicks ass.
