Radeon 32 ddr and drivers...Getting those crap a$$ lockups....

Shockwave

Banned
Ok, I've posted this prob before, but I really dont think its powersupply....I have a
ATI Radeon 32 ddr
Win98SE
128 RAM
800 Tbird
SB Live, Value
IBM 75GXP

I can run fine in 2D games (such as C&C, Max, Warcraft etc)
But! If I try to run any 3D games (Q3, Halflife etc) I run about 10 to 15 minutes before lock up. Ive tried following...
1) Install just ATI drivers...3D lockups...
2) Install ATI drivers then VIA update to correct ATI GART file overwrite...lockups
3) Every possible setting you can think of..(resolution, details, 32/16 bit, yelling etc)

So, assuming its not powersupply (which I dont think it is, but I also think its related to other probs I'm havin) what drivers/install oder to I need? Also, where can I find updates? Does anyone else have problems with this/like this? I'm getting ready to try the following (just to give a roadmap)...
1) Different vid card (NVidia TNT2)
2) "frankenputer" - Using power supply from another pc to run periphs then another to run
mobo

Lastly, I've heard a rumor which I am getting ready to try in frustration...I've heard that the surest way to fix bugs is to have pc powered on, then remove case, then wash out with warm soapy water...I've heard that washes the bugs right out of the pc...Is this true..? 🙂

PS - Thanks for everyones help so far!

I had this problem before! 🙂 ~~ I think they're mainly ATi Card's Problem, their Drivers or mobo incompatiblity. I used to have an old ATi Rage Fury (Back in the day) that it did exactly this. After I upgraded to GeForce 2 gts ultra everything was fine and dandy.

Yes, the drivers are hell for Radeon.

Download the newest version of DirectX you can (even if you have the newest version). Download the newest Radeon drivers. Download the AGP VxD driver for your motherboard.

Remove the Radeon driver (along with any other video drivers you may have on your system). Restart the computer and go into your BIOS and make sure that "AGP 4X" is disabled. Go into Safe Mode. Double click on the AGP VxD driver extraction program and select "Uninstall AGP VxD Driver" or whatever it says (should say "Install in Turbo Mode, Install in Standard Mode, and Uninstall VxD Driver). After this, reset and go back into regular mode.

Make sure that Windows doesn't load the Radeon drivers automatically (in other words, be in Windows without any display drivers). Try to install DirectX (it might say that you already have the newest version after it extracted files, but that's okay; the extracted files aren't cleaned up off of the system and that's one of the things that's causing these problems). Even if it says that you didn't have to install it, it might ask you to reset anyway. DON'T RESET. Now load the Radeon drivers.

After the Radeon drivers are loaded and you're back in Windows, try to install DirectX one more time exactly like before. It'll probably tell you to restart again, so go ahead and do that.

I've been playing around with my Radeon 32MB DDR too. I also get the OpenGL game lockups. It does the same exact thing. It locks up within 5 to 15 minutes. I'm beginning to think it's because I have AGP 4X enabled. Is there any way to revert to AGP 2X though a registry setting? My MSI motherboard does not allow AGP bus speed slection through the BIOS.

BTW- It locks up with my system overclocked and at default speed.

Hey all, I had those problems with my AIW Radeon as well. The best thing to do is to do a clean installation of the OS to completely get rid of any remnants of old video card drivers. It seems as if Radeon drivers have to be all alone or else there will be problems. After I reformatted and reinstalled Windows 98 and Millenium, 3D games run silky smooth as opposed to before my reformat/reinstall where they would crash.

I've been researching this for a while and after numerous trial and error, and I don't think it has anything todo with the Radeon drivers, I have the same problem with my TNT2 card, I wish people would stop bashing ATI when they are not at fault at all. The most likely cause would be with the VIA AGP Vgart drivers. After you have installed everything re-install the VIA AGP drivers and just choose normal instead of turbo and if you o/c reduce your FSB to 95 to see if that would make it more stable. I'm starting to strongly suspect that the VIA AGP Chipset is not that compatible with either/or some old SGRAM/2X/4X AGP that are still found on some old and new cards. Like mrhair said a clean install would not hurt either. Shockwave or all did you buy your card OEM because I think that the OEM cards may have the older SGRAM.

Thanks for everyones help so far!! I personally dont love my Radeon, *really* want to keep it, but if I cant get it to run....

Anyways! Currently I'm using the 3044 version of drivers, but I've seen 3056 posted on the net...What version is everybody using? Also, I've tried installing the VIA AGP driver after installing ATI's drivers, still didnt do it, but I also installed in turbo mode. Who knows? But, I'm gonna give it hell when I get home.

jinsonxu - Thanks for all your help, I'll try that...
Adamk47 - Might try Powerstrip, btu *this is weird* when I use it it says my vid card is 45
mhz at the core and like 800 mhz on the RAM (dont I wish!!)
NicColt - From CompUsa, was gonna do OEM, but didnt just in case this happened!

Anyways, I exchanged my original card for another (same) and still having prob, so its definitely not the card itself. Going to try a GeForce 2 to clear mobo. If all else fails, CompUsa said they would let me exchange it (again) for a GeForce2. Like I said, dont want to but...I wanna frag damnit!! 🙂

Stop using old drivers. Try the 3056 or the 3063 even from rage3d or regeunderground and see if you're still having problems. ALso, very important to properly install VIA's updated drivers for your mobo.

Ok, heres the thing....I tried the 3063, but it doesnt go. Is this supposed to be installed by itself, or over top of current drivers? I'm gonna try the 3056 drivers this morning when I get off work....Who knows? You know what they say....The sun shines on a dogs a$* once in a while...🙂

A lot of people been having problems with install. It's gotta be done like an nvidia install. Remove the current drivers and set it to VGA and then reboot and install the drivers.

BTW, what do you mean it doesn't go?

Sorry! Shoulda clarified. I mean, it starts to run the file, but freezes up before installing. .....shoot....I cant remember the *exact* point it stops responding (per Microsofts most AMAZING WIN98SE..🙂 ) but it does before it installs, sometime after decompressing and.....Oh....Just remmebered, I had to span it with WinZip to get it home on floppies....And I did get a tiny error which I thought wasnt a prob...Guess it was....
Hmpf, sorry! Sounds like a short between the keyboard and chair! 🙂

I had all sorts of problems last night with this and found it to be the following:
windows video errors were fixed by install the latest Via drivers (I had the .23 version for my KT7)
2D in windows worked great including DVD

D3D sent the computer to sleepyland with no return possible other that reset: the 3056 verison of the radeon drivers fixed this. I was using the ones that came on the cd but I was suspecting a corrupt download before I discovered I had old via drivers.

I was able to run the Ark for a long time last night so I do not expect a problem with 3D but I will install Unreal tonight and play and confirm this for you.
