You should do a search of posts older than 45 days (maybe even some current ones)--this has been covered a lot in the past.

In my opinion, sub $100 radar detectors are a waste of money. They false a lot, and their range is too limited to be of any use (i.e. by the time it goes off, the cop has already clocked you).

You would be best off saving your money and buying one when you can afford to spend a few hundred bucks. A lot of people swear by the Valentine 1, but there are a few other models that many people say are even better (newer technology than the V1). I will try to pull up a link for you.

Edit: Here's a good site.

In speaking with many members of the law enforcement community I have learned that radar detectors are mostly useless. With instant on radar you're nabbed before you have time to react. Laser detection is the same. By the time your detector picks up the laser you have about .25 of a second to react.

I've also noticed that since I've stopped using one, about 2 years now, I haven't gotten a ticket. I still speed as much as I used to, but have yet to be pulled over. (Knocks on wood)

hehe not sure.. i know even radar detectors are illegal in some states. i was just down in virginia and they had the little sign as you entered the state to turn em off.

about the scramblers though, ive even heard of companies that will pay for your ticket if you get pulled over while using it.

Its called being able to prove that the cop is stupid in court my friends... thats all it takes...

in the states its different than in Canada, as up here, you can't legally pay someone to be a witness or just be in court (which means the cop comes in without pay :)

For you Americans that get major tickets, research radar a little more, and you'll know more than the majority of cops out there.

link not working, will repost when I find it at home...

The scramblers don't work either. I read a report on them in Popular Science about a year ago. If I still have the issue I'll scan it in.
