Radar Detectors

I am interested in buying a radar detector, but i know very little about them. I know that you want 360 degree protection and protection from laser/ radar as well. Other than that, i am at a loss as to which brand to buy. A friend pointed me towards the valentine one detectors, but they cost way to much for my budget(US$400). I am interested in keeping the cost around $200.

Also, i what is the vg-2 protection? i noticed that most of the bel detectors have that.

I believe the best is Valentine 1 its about 300 bucks

Now VG2 - my detector has it but it has never come into activation. VG2 is a radar detector detecting device for cops, lets you know if someone or something is using a VG2 detector. When your device detects it it is supposed to scramble your detectors signal into fooling that you dont have one but still to let you know that someone is using a radar detector.

Trucks are illegal to have Radar Detectors therefore trucks sometimes use VG2 detectors based Radar detectors.

Valentine One is the best and only one I trust. I've ysed others but the V1 blows them away. $300 -$400 might seem steep but one ticket avoided (fine + insurance incrase) is well worth it.

I would if i could, but i dont have 400 to spend on a radar detector. Let me know what the next best thing is, or the next best thing in the $200 range.

the next best thing below a valentine one is an escort, they are definitely not as good as a valentine one, but in my use, i have seen them to be quite good detectors as well and would reccommend one highly, look at the passport 7500, it is the top of the line detector from them, i used a passport 4500 for years and it saved me many tickets, so i would imagine that the step up would only be better

I have a Bell something or other with the VG2 gadget and when I did use it , I was very satisfied. As far as I know, most of them work fairly well except that the more expensive ones have less false alerts. My Bell would warn me of impending radar traps well in advance . I can't see the need for an expensive detector unless you are going to make a career of speeding which will probably end in your demise anyway.

Nothing beats just speeding smartly. Keep your eyes open and scanning the road at all times and you should be able to see most cops around the same time a cheaper detector would go off.

Buddy of mine was driving from Chicago to Atlanta in a caravan of NSX's. They all had those little two way radios. He was the only 1 of 5 w/o a V1. The others would get on the radio and say V1 goin off, anyone elses? 3 others said yes, he'd end up waiting a few seconds for his Escort to go off. About that time he sees the cop. He picks up his cell phone and has a V1 fedexed to his hotel here in Atlanta.

I bought a whistler a couple years ago for around $180. Don't use the stupid thing anymore because my eyes are just as good. It was their best before the concealed display detectors.

edit: Pretty much nothing will save your butt from laser. Laser goes off, that pretty much means you are being clocked. You'd better bury that break pedal in hopes that the cop is reclocking you to make sure he got the right speed. Otherwise, may as well pull over to the right. Two of my friends have been hit recently by laser. One for 102 in a 55 -> went to jail. Another 125 in a 65 -> went to jail.

Perry...your last sentence is the best reason to frown on detectors. Those 2 friends of yours deserve what they got. We're not talking going 80-85 on the autoroute any more. All it takes is some @sshole to change lanes without looking in his mirror and you have instant death tragedy etc. People in NA are not used to driving at those speeds and most of all, the other motorists are not used to being in traffic with those velocities. When statistics are quoted about how there are less accidents on the Autobahn even with the higher speeds, they are for the most part misinterpreted. The speed of the cars is only one factor, the awareness of others travelling amongst them is the important thing.....Speed doesn't Kill....@ssholes DO!

I am a fairly safe driver and i dont really speed to fast. Usually about 80-85 on interstates when conditions permit. I have gotten 2 tickets on oppisite sides of the same town and i have to go through that town to get home. Dumb luck as i was going to tap the brake to turn off cruise control and i hit the gas instead on the second ticket. I might just save up a little and get that valentine1. It a new technology comes out, you can use their upgrade plan instead of getting a new one. Thanks for the replies...
