I picked one of these up yesterday at the Palo Alto Fry's. The model number is "DE1610". They have them locked up behind a glass case, and when I asked the Fry's salesman to get me one, he was like, "you want one of THOSE?" I guess he was disappointed that I didn't want one of the $200 ones.

FYI, Fry's normally sells this detector at $39.95 refurbished. Even at $39.95, it is still by far their cheapest detector.

I've tried it out yesterday and today, but haven't run into any cops using radar yet (or at least, I didn't detect any...) Driving around town, there are certain places that I drive by that _always_ set it off. The thing is really loud even at the lowest volume setting and it freaked me out the first few times that it went off. I'll try it out on the highway next week when I'm driving on Hwy 152 through Los Banos (a huge speed trap in the middle of the San Joaquin valley where the speed limit suddenly drops from 65 to 35).

It comes with mounting with suction cups, sticky velcro, a cigarette lighter adapter, instruction books and warranty info. If you register it, they'll replace it if it gets stolen.

i think car and driver reviewed a bunch in their last issue. basically the effectiveness of the detector is directly linked to its price:p the cheapies have cruddy range and have a very narrow detection window. go figure:p
