Rackmount? At home?

So I have an odd obsession with rack'd gear. How feasible would it be to have a small rack in my home? Hell what type of consumer components can I get in rack form?

I don't really care about 5.1/7.1 (I hate wires), but I do love my music.

So, rack mount gear at home, cool or stupid idea?

Rack mounting is good for pro gear especially if it must be portable. It makes things neater when you have full access from both sides. Most home gear does not appear to be rack friendly though.

Of course there's nothing wrong with using pro gear in the home. Fans on amps may annoy some though.

It's more commonly found in higher end components that might be installed into a room or closet next to/behind the theater. A lot of the components can be ordered with additional rackmount gear, but most pieces won't have it stock.

It's a great way to manage your equipment and I've always loved the look. I almost went with rack-mounted components once but oh well.

Yes, it most certainly is. They are almost as hot as some nice well made cables, but rack mounted+well cabled+nice cables=one of the sexiest things to behold.

I can't speak for receivers, but any big recording equipment store or website should rack-mountable sources like CD and DVD players.

If you're willing to go rackmount, you should seriously look into a studio amplifier. You can get an old Alesis RA100 for $60 to $70, and the results are quite nice.

Alternately, if you need stupid amounts of power for your Magnepans, consider Behringer. They're supposed to sound pretty good, and the EP2500 give gargantuan power for the dollar.
