Rack Mount Server

For some reason I have a wild hair growing and I want to build a rack mount server for my home network and/or to use as a game server. I have looked at cases but I dont know where to start looking for things such as motherboards etc (hdd/memory I can figure out). Can anyone direct me where to look?

Thanks

the first thing tha tyou have to do is get a rack mount. You can pick the size of the thing which is like 1u,2u,4 u etc.

I think you should go with the 4u and you will prolly be able to tranfer your desktop stuff to you rackmount and then just put it in the case..

ther eis nothing that speical with rakcmouts its just more neet!

skeletal29,

I was thinking about going 4U since space is not a problem. So most of the crap from a desktop will fit in a 4U?

Thanks

The SC435 looks like a good starter case.

I have ADSL at home and I was thinking of making the server my file server/router is this possible? I have four computers I would like to have on the network. Is this possible? If so how would I set it up? From my DSL modem to the server (using one NIC) then from another NIC to my hub?

Thanks

personally i think it's a bit of a waste of money....but it will be a good learning experience, so if thats what you want to do, by all means go for it 🙂

i wanted to set up a local wireless isp but it just dint work out. Then i wanted to do a online storage for 3$ a gig but that dint work out either...

well it would have but i dont have 3k for first idea and 1500 for second idea.

The way you described setting up your network should work fine.

The only suggestion I would have, would be to setup a firewall machine with something like Linux Router Project or Smoothwall on it. Connect this machine to your modem and then out of it into a hub/switch. Then all your internal machines will have a little more protection. You need a very minimal machine for this, a 486 with 8MB RAM or so would be more than adequate.

If you really don't want to mess with that, then you can use a single machine to do the masquerading and webserver and whatever else you want. Just be careful and setup a proper firewall on it.

Most routers have a firewall built into them. That would be an eaiser option to get up and running. Having your main file server act as a gateway to the internet is just bad practice IMHO. If someone hacks into it, they have access to all your files and probably the other machines on your network. A fully functional linux distribution can have a large number of security holes, unless you work to get it secure.

The firewall is just an added layer of security. Just check your router specs to see if it has a built in configurable firewall.
