Cheerios Commercial Featuring Mixed Race Family Gets Racist Backlash (VIDEO)
The Huffington Post | By Braden Goyette Posted: 05/31/2013 12:44 am EDT | Updated: 05/31/2013 10:36 am EDT

An adorable Cheerios commercial featuring an interracial couple and their daughter generated such a strong racist backlash on YouTube that the comments section had to be closed.

The ad had received more than 1,600 likes and more than 500 dislikes as of Thursday evening.

Prior to the closure, the comment section had been filled "with references to Nazis, 'troglodytes' and 'racial genocide,'" according to Adweek.

YouTube comment sections have a reputation for breeding racist flame wars. CNN focused on the issue earlier this year, after a panel addressing racism and race on YouTube was held at South By Southwest:

"Everyone gets hate comments on YouTube," said Andre Meadows, the creator of the Black Nerd Comedy channel. "You can make the most wonderful video in the world and you will get 'Fake!' and 'Gay!'"
But for minority creators, "when you get comments, it seems to be targeted toward race almost immediately. A lot of people get 'dumb video, stupid video' -- but with mine it immediately goes to racial slurs."

Commenters on the cereal's Facebook page also said they found the commercial "disgusting" and that it made them "want to vomit." Other hateful commenters expressed shock that a black father would stay with his family.

However, many took to Facebook to express their appreciation for Cheerios' decision to feature a mixed-race family.

"Having been mixed in the '70s, I'd like to thank everyone at Cheerios for making a commercial with an interracial couple! Going to buy boxes today! Many thanks for reflecting what my family looked like," Beschelle Lockhart posted Monday.

"Just watched your commercial with the biracial family. Beautiful. Thank you so much," Alexandra Burt wrote.

Cheerios was unfazed by the racist Internet backlash. "Consumers have responded positively to our new Cheerios ad. At Cheerios, we know there are many kinds of families and we celebrate them all," Camille Gibson, Cheerios vice president of marketing, told Gawker.

OK, if youtube comments have any sway in reality then the trolls have clearly won. Any comment chain I have ever seen for any video seems like a race to the bottom in intelligence and debating tact, so to even justify that with any official response is really sad. They know you can disable comments and save lots of time and poorly formed sentences, right?

I block Youtube comments. There's seldom anything worth wasting the bandwidth on, and the rare lulz isn't worth the steady stream of trash.

Yeah... this is one of those "welcome to the internet" things. The first two posts pretty well have it covered.

Well, it isn't very different from ATOT, is it? There's some stuff that makes sense and some stuff that's just tripe. It's the interwebz.

I really don't care what the racial makeup of a couple in a commercial is, but it really is annoying to see the racial pandering in commercials. This country is ~70% white, ~15% black and ~15% other. How often do you see a commercial where there is a black guy, two hispanic dudes, 3 assorted asians, a native american and one goofy skinny hipster white guy in the background?

They feel it's necessary to over-represent to promote racial equality.
I'm not bothered if the demographics are closer to reality, but it's worse to go in the other direction and have very few minorities in media. It sends the wrong message to kids, at least... though maybe they would benefit from not watching a ton of television during the formative years, anyway.

It really isn't something that doesn't bother me too much. But I've definitely noticed it, and sometimes I have found it annoying.
Stereotypically gay dudes, Indians, Jews, hipsters, and other groups are also overrepresented. Southerners (especially with accents) are underrepresented. Hispanic/Spanish-speaking people or Latinos (trying to use every possible term her to avoid offense :p) are also underrepresented on mainstream television. But obviously there are a few Spanish-language stations.

A lot of this has to do with the fact that Hollywood and New York are major filming centers and we have higher minority populations on the coasts, especially in the big cities. NYC really does look closer closer, demographically speaking, to what you see in commercials. The elementary, middle school, and high school (before my family moved to the suburbs) were about as diverse you could get. Maybe 1 out of 4 was white, at most. Closer to 1 in 6. My childhood friends and I could make one those holding hands across the world images, or a "we are world" parody viideo, lol.

You clearly havent taken a marketing class.

The minority groups are the fastest growing in America. By 2030 they will be the new majority. A HUGE part of marketing in America is looking at demographics.

Youtube comments are similar to the comments that are posted in Yahoo stories or any other news/social website. People want attention, want to spread their message and/or convince others, are bored etc. These comments don't really have much meaning. Just like vast majority of the stuff on the internet, period. But we all come back for more.

YouTube comments are newsworthy? Good lord what is this world becoming...

I actually can't help but think this was actually planned, otherwise I never would have been aware of the situation or watched the ad and pay attention to it, and I'm certain I'm not the only one

One of those race baiting piling on threads we see too often is going on right now in ATOT, coincidentally or not.

Pandering? Apparently some people just aren't as important to selling one's products as they think they should be, lol.

As often as I see commercials filled with white people....

What's your point?

Big fat bearded tattoo'ed white guys wearing outlaw motorcycle style clothing are extremely over represented whenever the part of a criminal is played. Where's the justice in that?

To say nothing of the disgusting defamation of nerdy balding glasses-wearing white men in their 50's as pedophiles.

Or nerdy balding glasses-wearing white men in their 50's representing nerdy balding glasses-wearing white men in their 50's. I've never seen any Latino nerds represented.

That black actor looks really familiar. Was he a secondary character in some TV show or something?

And yeah, it's a cute commercial. Saw it a little while ago, but not because it was cute, but because of the comments issue. Free advertising! And it's working. It now has 1.4 million views. The other Cheerios ads on the right sidebar have 10000-141000 views, which means the next most popular ad in that limited Cheerios sampling has only 1/10th of the views.

Anyways, I'm going now to have my bowl of Cheerios for breakfast.
