Racist Steve King loses in Iowa primary

With virtually all precincts reporting, Steve King has lost soundly in his district primary. And due to the nature of Iowa election laws, he can't run as an independent. We'll be free of his racism in politics for at least four years.

Haven't heard much about the winner, Ralph Feenstra, but it wouldn't take much to be an improvement over King.

Also, isn't it symbolic that King lost on a day full of anti-racism protests? They didn't necessarily cost him the vote, but I'd like to think of it as a treat for the US that at least one racist has lost power.

What a joke. You don't even know how long people serve in the government. I used to believe you were a voice of reason, but after reading this:

Doesn't matter that it's 2 years instead of 4 BTW. After losing this primary, he's politically dead. The odds of him ever serving elected office at the federal level again are minimal.

I have quoted users from different threads in the tech spots if it was relevant without issue. I guess the mods will decide. However, I don't think that I'll receive the "May the odds ever be in your favor" response.

You're crapping the thread by importing a disagreement you have with the OP about a completely unrelated topic. What does the OP's opinion of how to handle people who violate COVID-19 restrictions have to do with Steve King losing the primary?

Back on topic. I have no doubt his replace will be every bit the conservative rural legislator that King was but there is hope that even voters in King’s district can get tired of the racist grand standing that had nothing to do with their interests.

I'm sorry I got the terms wrong, but suffice it to say King will have a tough time coming back.

And I'm not authoritarian, it's that I believe in science. You know, observable evidence and reality. The virus doesn't care that you really, really want to have a backyard barbecue; it'll happily ruin your life or that of a loved one. If you're in a state where social distancing rules are still in effect and you insist on a house party, then yes, the full weight of the law should come down upon you. You want to put the entire community in danger purely out of selfishness? Then we can make sure you don't harm the community for a long time. If a jail or prison isn't safe, then house arrest. Or if that's still too much trouble, a steep fine.

This is what makes me nervous about the BLM protests. I'm all in favor of people protesting for a good cause (as opposed to the "I want others to die so I can get a haircut" types) and will not ask them to stay in, but there is a certain amount of gambling here. Thankfully, many of the protesters are wearing masks... I just hope it's enough to avoid a resurgence of the virus.

Look how often the mask shifts and needs to be readjusted. This is why the initial reluctance to recommend mask wearing, the false sense of security. Hopefully no one is infected in these protests, but the spike will be seen in the numbers at the end of the week.

Even the dumbest of them are coming to realize that there is no logic or justification/rationalization for continuing to support him. Now it's just knee-jerk reactions to 'not support him' while they still defend the admin and it's actions. The juggling with pulleys dance is fucking pathetic.
 
I wouldn't take this too seriously. King was openly sacrificed by the GOP Establishment because he was an embarrassment, and (more importantly) because his bullshit had cost him all of his committee seats in the House.

Oh yeah, the GOP is determined to get him out, but it's still good news that he is out.

It's also telling that King was attracted to the GOP in the first place, and that the party tolerated him for years before the public pressure became too great. He reflects one of the underlying problems with Republicans: the party may claim that it's not racist, but it attracts racists like flies with its policies.
