I am posting this because a fellow AT'er has made a racist joke at the expense of the Sikh community. I urge the Mods to exercise their power as I hope they do when they encounter humor that targets other ethnic groups.

The thread can be found here. and the comment that I am reffering to is by vrbaba. If he edits his post, I have quoted his post in my post below as a record. If the mods need further explanation as to why this is a racist joke, feel free to pm me or contact me in any way possible.

Until we feel that it is becoming a trolling issue; these types of issues are handled on a case by case basis.

This is not even a blip on the radar screen by P&N standards.

Sikhs are not a race. Relgious bashing is allowed here. That's just something you are going to have to deal with.
 
1 - Sikhs and Jews are considered both an ethnicity and a religion as far as I am concerned.
2 - This "joke" is used to torment (yes torment) Sikhs because people have a theory that when the clock strikes 12, Sikhs become insane.

I don't venture much in to P&N and tolerating this joke creates a hostile environment for me (as a Sikh) in OT. This is BS and I kindly ask the mods to reconsider. Who should I PM? Is Mill the mod?

Did I argue that it is community property? No. Its a private forum and it has rules. I merely pointed out the possibility of a rule being broken.
 
Honestly, if people get any more ridiculous about this stuff, jokes will be banned altogether, because guess what, they poke fun at something by their very definition 😛 I suspect the OP would like us to ban Englishman, Irishman & Scotsman jokes now because they are racist :roll:

I am not a mod. This forum has always been pretty open about allowing criticism of religion. Jokes about race and the like are not allowed, but it is apparent by a little research that Sikhs are a religion, and while there may be some ethnic ties, they do not have the ethnic ties that Jews have to their religion.

Secondly, unless something is entirely bigoted (i.e. Jews do X because of X and I hate Jews) then it is treated based on the thread and the discussion. While it may have been a joke that effected you personally, there are plenty of jokes that are similar that have gone on here forever. Rednecks and NASCAR, Asian Parents, even heated discussions of Black Culture are allowed unless they get bigoted or over the top.

If the poster had made a slur against Sikhs (i.e. referred negatively to their turban with a slur or something similar) I've no doubt that action would have been taken. A joke like that -- that a majority don't even understand to begin with -- it not something that violates the norm here. Complain if you must, but religion takes a fare amount of bashing here. One only has to look at the typical OT Christian thread (Fund-A-Mental cases instead of fundamentalist Christians), or the discussion of extreme Islam to understand how things are here.

Just deal with it...I could care less if people insult my people unless it's obviously meant as a derogatory flame. I laugh at jokes about other people's races so they can laugh at mine. You have to be fair.
 
Sorry......to say this but its really difficult to prove that your what you say you are as far as being a sikh`s....

Also I did not see anything more than a vague and not so good attempt at humor...

The whole thread was about a actual news report.....with no intention of being racially oriented other than the article mentions sikh`s.........

If they take action on that thread then they should also take action anytime anybody sneezes becuase I take offense towards people who sneeze....

See how idiotic it is asking for a ban...

Much worse comments are passed about Muslims. Don't cry until the comments exceed that level.
