This has been bothering me for quite some time, Racism It pisses me off how people can not like you by your color.. Its bad enough people judge you by other things, but color is too, far, i think racist people have issues and need to be staighted out..

True, people should not judge others untill you know them well enough to be right. Judging by the looks is just stupid.
Studies have shown that people do judge others based on how they look. Racism is a sort of collective form of that type of behavior.
Frankly, I have a real problem with this.
I was a funny looking, cross-eyed kid until 5 surgeries made me look normal. Being a Latina in a redneck community didn't help, either. I was very overweight, too... and man, the kids were mean as piss to me.
When I blossomed and they wanted to be 'friends' with me, I saw through the BS. I was angry as he11 about it, and was quite a rebel for a few years. I hated them all, the shallow bastards!
The one thing I learned from that is to look deeper than the surface. If everyone could do that, there wouldn't be racism. Unfortunately, I don't know of any real way to explain this to people who insist on judging others based on appearance, including color.

not only is racism a problem, but so is prejudice. i think the word prejudice can be linked ot the word prejudge.
that is exactly what happens hear on this board. a LOT of people are prejudice, but in order to tackle racism, you must be open minded about EVERYTHING. this is something i highly doubt will happen because so many people are not only programmed, but stuck in their ways to give something new a try.

I think we are al racists to some degree. It's just that the ones who talk about it or advertise it are subject to criticism.

True, everyone looks differntly at people who are not like them, mostly because they dont know what to expect, expect something different or expect something else. If people would just mingle a bit more it wouldnt be so bad.

I have it in my life, and it has nothing to do with the color of the person. I find myself judging people unfairly. But I bet if I take the time to meet them and get to know them, my judgment was probley completly wrong.
Just something that I have to struggle with. However, I do not ever say anything that I shouldnt say, its just what goes through my head. Know what I mean?

I grew up in the Dakota's and never saw a black person till I was 14, now live & work in the Dallas Metro area, WTF is up with some black's attitudes?
I'll be purchasing something @ a store, or trying to do anything @ work, interact with a black with an attitude & with some blacks it's like I've just asked my ex wife for my child support back for the last 10 years.
In my perfect world:
1.) Blacks would lose the attitude, let's forgive & forget (my ancestors were indentured servants in Europe)
2.) Blacks would become more intolerant of out of wedlock births by other blacks.
3.) Blacks would become more intolerant of other blacks who are substance abusers.
My own passive way of dealing with the attitude is to be pleasant as hell with any black that gives me even mediocre service, and to respond minimally to the folks with attitude. When the service is really bad, I ask for the manager/supervisor & bring the employee's attitude into the discussion.

Just FYI, a person is not prejudiced, close-minded, or whatever you want to call them just because they dislike a certain type of music. Nor are they open-minded just because they happen to _like_ a certain type of music.

RACISM is all around us. I just try not to perpetuate (Sp?) the hate. What really gets me is how older folks pass down their feelings of hate and racism to younger generations. Sometimes it takes the smallest effort to be the bigger person and not go along with the status quo.
Racism is based on ignorance and a person's environment. If all you are taught is hate through your childhood, then most of the time that is what you will show as an adult. Everybody is judgemental of things we shouldn't be, that is part of being human. But racism goes beyond that initial first thought, it is a hatred of somebody based on what they look like, not what they are.

THAT is close minded, and THAT is what i was talking about. i dont care if you dont like it, but at least you gave it a try to see what you were downing.

Racism is one of the biggest social problems we face I think. (I say social not physical like diseases and such)
I think we often hear it said that people hate because we are different.
I disagree - I think we differentiate because we hate. I think there is an anger and distrust in humanity that, if not understood and controlled, manifests itself in hatred and anger to others. To excuse this illogical hatred, we differentiate to remove ourselves from those we feel anger towards. If there were only one race - say we were all blue skinned, I think we would find that countries became the difference - the racism point if you will. So put everyone into one country... people from one province start to hate the other provinces. Put us all in one province and the people in the Western half start to hate those from the eastern half. Put us in one area and towns hate other towns. One Town and streets hate other streets. One street and one side hates the other side, etc... (mind you, I only mean those who do fall into racism would behave like this. The rest of us wouldn't, I hope.)

engine, once again you misinterrpretted what i said. i dont mind if a person dislikes hiphop. i just want them to give it a chance, to change their views of it being "just talk, no rythym, just stealing others music", because that is DEFINITLY not true. that like you telling me 2+2 doesnt equal 4
How did we get from racism back to an argument about hiphop?
It would be great if the world could get rid of racism, but I doubt that it'll ever happen. There will always be people discriminating and stereotyping. And these attitudes will be passed on from generation to generation.
We are racists in so many different ways, we don't even recognize them anymore. I'm sure everybody here has laughed at a racist joke, or even told one. Whether they were told in fun or not, it is racist. Then there are things that we don't even think about. Sitting "Indian" style. An American expression - extremely racist toward American Indians.
