Racism in Belgium

There were reports of police ill-treatment, often accompanied by racist abuse in the context of identity checks. Such acts were apparently often committed with impunity.

The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination expressed concern about "racist incidents in police stations? where the victims were immigrants and asylum-seekers" and recommended that Belgium take all necessary measures to prosecute such "racially motivated acts of violence".

Child asylum-seekers, both those unaccompanied and those travelling with relatives, remained liable to be held in detention centres for aliens for several months. Measures to address the special protection needs of unaccompanied minors and of children in their own right appeared insufficient. Several unaccompanied minors were returned to their countries of origin, apparently without adequate arrangements made for their protection on return.

lol, I looked that up when FreeGeeks posted his thread, too. That's why I said that Amnesty International condemns everyone. Some of these things are kind of similar.

Then maybe you should be spending your time trying to enact change in your country instead of pointing out flaws in other peoples'.

lol, you're invading my domain :| :) But you shouldn't stoop down to Frank's (FreeGeeks) level.

Is it really that surprising though? In a poll about 22% of Belgians described themselves as "very openly racist" with even more describing themselves as "a little racist." Over 2/3 of the population openly expresses their racist views. I think the poll was from 1997... with the increasingly xenophobic, racist, anti-immigrant views, it's probably even higher now.

No, that's wrong. Then nobody can talk about any human rights issue anywhere in the world since there will be some in your own home country. It's a matter of degree. Did pro-apartheid South Africans say the same thing to anti-apartheid activists? It's just a cheap trick.

I'm glad people on this forum are starting to listen to Amnesty International, there was a time when it was ridiculed because it critizied the US, different times ahead :)

In India, who brought about equality? Some Frenchman blustering from afar? How about the USA? Was it a Brazilian?

I don't start a zillion threads. And I group them together often because not as many people are interested in them as Iraq-related threads which get 50 threads on the same topic. I just started 3 threads in the last few days (all 3 completely different topics too), but I couldn't even group them together because people like you were just insulting and initiating flamefests. I couldn't start with a fresh thread.

This thread is a joke. Give me a country and I'll start another one about racism reported by Amnesty International there too.

it's very interesting to see how our American friends are downplaying and spinning around the subject of racism in their own country but gather in great masses in threads about racism in Europe to start a collective circle jerk

interesting

very interesting

this only shows that the few Europeans on this board are willing to discuss the subject while Americans are ignoring these threads

Since this is a thread about Belgium, I guess I should ask...FreeGeeks or another European, do you believe that European racial/ethnic issues at the government, social and public level are better/worse/or equal in magnitude to problems in the US? And why?

That's like saying the fact that the Europeans don't post serious human rights issues means that they're ignoring it.

it's also interesting to see that your aborted Siamese twin RabidMongoose and flagwaving idiot HeroWhatever are starting several threads and basically ridiculing the threads I started.

interesting

very interesting

if an American starts a thread about racism in Europe it is considered viable information
when an European starts a thread about racism in the USA he is ridiculed

interesting

very interesting

Huh? I don't think that I've started any thread in P&N in a long time and responded with OK comments in your threads.

I think you're way too defensive...especially given how you first responded to me when I first started posting in this forum and your random 'woe is France' comments.

Nobody is even acting uncivil or starting flamefests in your threads.

interesting

It's interesting since you started your threads to ridicule my threads.
