I've heard horror stories about the Halo 3 community and I participate in a match with idiots. This was the first game I played online. I posted this in the PGR4 forum on Xbox.com also and found that I'm not the only one who sees this stupidity.
I had this same fear about Halo 3, but I decided to give it a try. So I bought it and went online and I am sure glad I did. Most, if not all, of the time I'm sans microphone in Lone Wolf ranked matches. I haven't had any problems with people yelling at me or anything and haven't been given any negative reviews. The best part is that you can easily mute any player that is getting too annoying or vulgar.
