The single thing that kept me from enjoying PGR2 and PGR3 fully has returned in full force in PGR4, the "purists" that feel if you even tap their car, you're a terrible gamer and are the perfect target for bad feedback or being called out over mics.
I had been playing single player Career mode mostly and after finishing my first season, decided to jump online in a quick ranked match. In my very first ranked championship, I faced three opponents on some very tight and windy tracks, in storm weather (I can't recall what tracks they were, as I rarely pay attention to any names).
Towards the beginning of the first track, I slowed to take a turn and was rammed full speed from behind which forced me into another car going around the turn. I think the person who got it the worst was actually the initial rammer, but that didn't stop the endless spouting of profanity at me for screwing up that driver's time. We continued the race, I finished second.
The second race was clean for the most part until I was approaching the last few turns. The racer in first place (same guy who spouted off in the first race) must have screwed up because I flew past him on a short straight section. I slowed to take a turn and wouldn't you know it, I get slammed full speed again from behind, throwing me into a wall with a "now you know how it feels". while he bounced off me and retook the lead. This caused me to fall back two places so I finished in 3rd.
The final race was uneventful and I finished second again. Later, 360Voice.com informed me that my reputation had dropped (this single race was the only online gaming I did for the day).
Now, I play games for fun not to be perfect. I've got a full time job, a wife and a kid, so I just dont have the time to devote to becoming perfect, nor do I really want to. I dont care if I get rubbed or bumped a little bit ("rubbin's racing", or so I've heard), I prefer close races as they are more exciting, but the anger exhibited here I've seen countless times in PGR3 and 2 and quite frankly, people like this are simply ruining the online aspect of the game.
I would hope that in a more arcadey feeling racer that people wouldn't have that mentaility but that's just not the case. I'm not playing Forza here, I'm playing a game that rewards you for "cool driving". I dont know anything about gear timing or tuning. I play for fun but PGR online is just not fun. I may try a few more online matches, but I'll probably stick to my own AI battles.
