Racing Purists Suck

The single thing that kept me from enjoying PGR2 and PGR3 fully has returned in full force in PGR4, the "purists" that feel if you even tap their car, you're a terrible gamer and are the perfect target for bad feedback or being called out over mics.

I had been playing single player Career mode mostly and after finishing my first season, decided to jump online in a quick ranked match. In my very first ranked championship, I faced three opponents on some very tight and windy tracks, in storm weather (I can't recall what tracks they were, as I rarely pay attention to any names).

Towards the beginning of the first track, I slowed to take a turn and was rammed full speed from behind which forced me into another car going around the turn. I think the person who got it the worst was actually the initial rammer, but that didn't stop the endless spouting of profanity at me for screwing up that driver's time. We continued the race, I finished second.

The second race was clean for the most part until I was approaching the last few turns. The racer in first place (same guy who spouted off in the first race) must have screwed up because I flew past him on a short straight section. I slowed to take a turn and wouldn't you know it, I get slammed full speed again from behind, throwing me into a wall with a "now you know how it feels". while he bounced off me and retook the lead. This caused me to fall back two places so I finished in 3rd.

The final race was uneventful and I finished second again. Later, 360Voice.com informed me that my reputation had dropped (this single race was the only online gaming I did for the day).

Now, I play games for fun not to be perfect. I've got a full time job, a wife and a kid, so I just dont have the time to devote to becoming perfect, nor do I really want to. I dont care if I get rubbed or bumped a little bit ("rubbin's racing", or so I've heard), I prefer close races as they are more exciting, but the anger exhibited here I've seen countless times in PGR3 and 2 and quite frankly, people like this are simply ruining the online aspect of the game.

I would hope that in a more arcadey feeling racer that people wouldn't have that mentaility but that's just not the case. I'm not playing Forza here, I'm playing a game that rewards you for "cool driving". I dont know anything about gear timing or tuning. I play for fun but PGR online is just not fun. I may try a few more online matches, but I'll probably stick to my own AI battles.

I hate it when the computer rams me right behind the wheel so it always sends me into a horrible spin, especially since I'm already drifting around the corner. The computers are very bad at this because they always try to take the same line and ignore the fact that you're there.

I haven't played PGR4 online yet though, I want to hone my driving a bit more.

Heh...my Gamer feedback score was affected by PGR3 more than any other game. You're right, they'll send you negative feedback for every little thing in the game.

It was for that reason that I thought Burnout online was going to be fun, although unfortunately that wasn't the case in my experience (with Burnout Revenge on the 360).

It doesn't seem like it, it seems like you take gaming seriously enough to care about finishing first or second. Getting rammed sucks but just relax and enjoy it, there will be idiots in online community anywhere you go. You should have rammed his ass back on the next round. :D

burnout revenge is probably the most fun I've ever had online outside of an FPS game.

But he wasn't yelling about getting rammed...which leads me to believe that Modeps enjoys getting rammed full speed from behind... :Q

But there's a definite difference between being competitive and being a perfectionist :D

Just tell them that tapping a car from behind to adjust its line is a racing technique :p.

i find that you pick one online game and become perfect at it...otherwise, the kids who spend 5+ hours a day on it ruin the game experience...d"oh! im jealous

Your initial mistake was in assuming rationality on the part of XBL users. You've gotta have thick skin if youre going to put that headset on.

Find a game that doesn't have collisions turned on. Those are the only ones I play on anyway.

In ones that don't I ram at every chance I get, because I just leave bad feedback on them as well. Rep shouldn't matter because only you can see it anyway. The other players only see the amount of stars which always stays at five if you just play frequently.

I think the entire idea of a reputation is stupid, considering how many idiotic pre-teens play video games.

You should be concerned, your next prospective employer will look at your Xbox Live reputation when considering whether to hire you.

So you can't have fun and be competitive at the same time? That's new to me.

I just dl'd the demo and had a blast with the Triumph Speed Triple, to the point that I might not wait till this title hits the bargain bin.

I like EvilComputer92's advice. Maybe those of us that don't mind a little paint exchange can filter ourselves into our own races, or something, though I guess the ranked games force you to interact with these XBL losers.

Apparently not :( You've gotta be balls to the wall if you want to be competitive. NO FUN TO BE HAD.

I've heard horror stories about the Halo 3 community and I participate in a match with idiots. This was the first game I played online. I posted this in the PGR4 forum on Xbox.com also and found that I'm not the only one who sees this stupidity.

Modeps, I just played a handful of PGR4 races and never had anyone talk trash. I smashed into people going around corners (sideswiped them) and no one seemed to care. Hell, I was in first place after going around the first corner (using the RX-7 in St. Petersburg :p) until some bastard smashes me and sends me into a spin... I was able to pull into 3rd after a bit though.

Maybe it's because you're in the Professional league where I'm in Underground? People think they have to be Pros in there :p. I did notice; however, that it seems like a lot of people quit matches right once they get in there. I've finished two races by myself so far (I don't know if there's a penalty for leaving). Heh my last race was a simulation and I couldn't find the up shift and down shift buttons at first .

QFT! XBL community ruins the gaming experience way too often.

Oh hrm, I thought I saw you in Professional earlier. Must've been my mind playing tricks on me!

I stopped since matches were becoming too hard to find ones that I like for my taste (I'm horrible at most rain matches with fast cars :() and I even had one where people were all "glhf" and stuff.

EDIT: Oh man, Modeps, I saw your profile and realized that Every Extend Extra EXTREME is out :D. That game is great on the PC, not as good on the PSP (too pixely compared to the PC)... let's hope the 360 one is good.

That's the spirit! :D

I always enjoyed when a new MotoGP demo would come out, and you'd get on a track with 15 other motorcycles (or however many that game held...24 maybe?). There was always 2 or 3 that would set up shop in the corners, trying to block the oncoming riders. Some people got extremely pissed, but I found it very fun and enjoyable to try and avoid them :). If I had bought the game, though, and idiots where on there doing that, it'd be a different story.
