Have you all found that certain ethic groups dont tip as well as others. I just started waiting tables a few weeks ago. For the most part we(blacks)tip sh!!ty adn stingy, while many other ethic groups tip normally. Annoys me, everytime I wait on folks that look like me, i cringe and think, man im sure they are cool, but they wont tip. Any of my other fellow waiters found this to be the case?

Of course this isnt always the case, but ive found truth in this many times.

Actually there was a study done on this and for the most you are correct according to the study.

My son works at a high end steak house and the servers hate getting black patrons because of this. It isn't uncommon to get a $3-$5 tip for a $200 meal. I won't paint with a broad brush, but it happens way too often.

eh, $30-40 tip on a $200 meal is a bit excessive IMO so I usually cap it around $20ish.

"The study found that 63 percent of blacks and 30 percent of whites didn't understand that the standard restaurant tip in the United States is 15 to 20 percent."

Ahhh, tips keep getting bigger and bigger. Pretty soon it will be a 50% for crappy service. It needs to get back to 10%.

Sadly, if I made this post (being white) I would be deemed a racist, biggot, whatever.

Anywho, now that you've brought it up, yes, I've noticed this. Who knows?

10%? At a high end steak house or other nice restaurant (assuming it's nice if you're spending $200), the service should be VERY good and that warrants at least 15-20%.

I have been a waiter before and while I am the #1 advocate of moving away from our "automatic" tipping system, when you DO tip you should tip well.

Speak for yourself... I always tip right when I go out, even when the tables to my left, right, and all around leave a $2 tip.

Yes, that is pretty dumb, but you might have been labeled that. I wouldnt have labeled you that however, its the truth. I would have taken your side. I tend to side with the truth

ditto. for good service i'll tip 20% or more sometimes.
when i go get sushi, i'll usually tip both the waiter/waitress and the guy who makes the sushi. 15-20% each if i enjoyed my meal.

i agree with the OP.

i also used to find that foreigners, regardless of race, would tip badly as well.

I think the best tippers are people who once ( or still) work jobs that are tip based. I was a pizza delivery driver when i was in college, now I hardly ever tip less than 20%.

I always tip exactly 15% of the bill BEFORE taxes, whether the service is good or bad. I get pissed whenever they make me wait for to take the credit card and run it thru, but I still tip 15% anyway. I always say "Oh, they're taking too long to run it, I'm going to tip less", but I always end up feeling bad and just tip 15% anyway.

I deliver pizzas (at least until next sunday), and I honestly dread delivering to hispanics. I hate the fact that its like that, but I'd say at least 8 out of 10 hispanics give no tip whatsoever, even if they get their pizza well before the time they are quoted.

I always start at 15% and adjust from there depending on my level of satisfaction with service.

One girl got a 30% tip because she was just awesome. Friendly, on the spot, made sure we had our drinks filled, and that our food was what we wanted.

Another girl got no tip because she had a mental breakdown when her ex-boyfriend showed in the restraunt and left us hanging for over 30 minutes without a drink or anything.

I would someday like to put a little meter on the table that I can adjust to show the level of tip I'm giving based on the level of sevice.

Actually I have a friend that does something kind of like that -- he lays his tip on the table shortly after we get seated and depending on how quickly we get drinks and the like and how attentive the server is he will begin to remove money from the tip if the service is obviously sub par. Some catch on to what he does and pick up the service those who dont are usually the ones who aren't good servers anyways. Pretty funny tho IMO

Very true for my father--he's a major tightwad. I tip around 15%. Sometimes, on business trips, I tip less when I eat out alone but order very expensive items. The rationale is that the server does the same amount of work whether it's a $10 entree or a $25 entree. OTOH, I also tip more than 15% if the total bill is small.
