BB here in at the Mt Laurel NJ location had the 9800 NON PRO for sale this past week for $299.99. Its stupid for people to even question this.

I've heard all over the place that the R9800np is for retail at best buy. That is the reason i started this post!

What i want to know now is if the one at best buy differs significantly from the one's in the dell systems. There is just not enough info on this card, and it seems like a great mid to high level card at a potentially good price (wow thats alotta smoke and speculation).

Someone out there needs to reveal the secrets! Now!

I'll call up my Best Buy and a few others around here in Indiana and see if they have any or expect any soon.

Could some of you post pictures of the card and box? Manual as well if possible...

Its doesn't have to be a great picture, even from a webcam if you don't have a digital camera like me, but make it clear enough to read 9800 128mb.

the box looks exactly like the 9800 pro box except it doesnt say pro. It just says Radeon 9800 on the front.

Well after looking last around for different reviews I found this at Hard
on the pro9800 powercolor...check this out
================================================
PowerColor Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB ? Operating at default speeds (325/290Mhz) and stock 9800 Pro speeds (380/340Mhz) and overclocked speeds using driver version Catalyst 3.4.
================================================
Seems that powercolor is DEAD SLOW compared to a stock 9800 pro.
So I wonder if this is something that ATI is boxing up and selling.
default memory on the board is

================================================

The RAM modules being used are Samsung K4D26323RA-GC2A chips which have a nanosecond rating of 2.86ns
================================================

nope these are not cheap chips.

So its not a remarked pro that BB is selling but a real 9800 np

by the way in typical powercolor fashion
"QUOTE"
this card has produced the leanest overclocking experience of any 9800 Pro video card we have experienced.

I bet the bb version is a better card
and its a $100 cheaper

I stopped in at bestbuy and asked about the card.
Never heard of that.
I asked them to check...they looked in the computer
and said they have 1 9800 listing in the warehouse
a pro for $399...nothing coming in at $299

anyone else seen any anywhere?

Yeah, they sell 9800 non pro here at my local Best Buy (Apple Valley, MN) for 299.99....the box is just like a retail ATI 9800 pro cept it doesnt say pro...

It might be useful to point out that the tag showing the price was written in black sharpie, not the usual printed tag...but yeah, they had like 5 in stock...not to mention like 5 pros....thats a lot of gaming greatness there...

BTW, ATI DOES sell other cards nonpro at retail as well...I bought a ATI 9000 non pro the other day...and if there is a 9200pro...I bought a 9200 non pro at retail as well...but Im pretty sure the 9200pros arent even out yet but some will be shipping with 256mb of ram...waste of some ram Id say since the card aint nothing special at all...trust me :)

No artifacts, no optimization.

Hook yourself up with at least 256mb more ram... u're crippling your computer. It's dirt cheap.

Heh I know. I just got the chips from newegg. Upto 1.2gig ram now.

They do exist, bought one here in Portland, OR. It's the same basic card, but uses the infineon ram. Verdict is still out, but the one I have at least so far it doesn't appear stable running 380/340.

Update:

Ok, did a little testing. For me, testing means changing clock, running 3dmark and seeing if any artifacts appear, then playing a game for a bit.

The ram is definately the limit. Right now I'm running stable at 325mhz. Anything much above 330mhz signs of memory corruption start to appear.

The core on the other hand, appears quite eager to be clocked. Right now I stopped at 380 with no hint of problems yet. I wouldn't at all be suprised if would go as high as the 9800 pro's overclock.

So my verdict: for being some $65 cheaper I'm more or less happy. But, I likely wouldn't be so if I had to run it at the very low shipping clock speeds. No gaurentees any other one will clock the same as this one, so if you've got the $65 it's probibly worth it for peace of mind.

Check out the bios update to the pro bios. Apparently (theorized) it ups the memory voltage.
