R9700 vs TI4600 ??

Whats better R9700 pro or GF4 ti4600 ?? I can get both around same price on ebay

The 9700 is the better card. It's basically a generation ahead of the geforce 4 4600 in speed and features (direcetx 9 as opposed to directx 8.1) so if you can get a 9700 pro for the price of a 4600 that would be good. Also, there are a few flavours of Radeon 9700: 9700 pro, 9700 (non pro), 9700 tx (at Dell), and I think there's one called 9700 Gold or something. All of them have different performance. Unquestionably the Rad9700 in EVERY dept. In fact the Rad9500PRO is significantly better than a GF4TI4600 and should be found under $200 too!

Heh, haven't been shopping in FS/T then....with how dirt cheap the 4600's go for around here, makes me wonder why I spend $160 for my 4200

I have a Radeon 9700 Pro and I can tell you honestly, the mimimum frame rate is very bad. You can get higher on a Geforce Ti4600. Granted, a Radeon 9700 Pro can have AA and AF on and get better frame rates than a Geforce Ti4600, but your min. frame rate is low w/ eye candy turned on. Whats the point of having eye candy with low frame rates?? You are better off not using it at all and frankly that defeats the purpose of buying this card. My system is a Pentium 4 2.53 Ghz w/ ASUS P4PE and I get in the 30's for fps w/ a Radeon 9700 Pro in UT2k3. Even Tom's hardware acknowledges this fact. Some of my friends have done tests with a Radeon 9700 Pro and a Geforce Ti4600 on different systems and the Geforce has much better min frame rates even though the Radeon crushes it in overall high fps. For a serious gamer, a high min. frame rate is much important than a high max frame rate. If you can wait, see how the Geforce FX does. Wait a little bit and do some research before you spend big bucks on a card. You will find it's well worth it. The image quality of a Radeon product period is super compared to a Geforce. There is a guy that works for ATI that frequents the Rage 3d forums and he says the min frame rate issue is cpu/driver controlled. It's ultimately up to you on what you want, but there are benchmarks that I have done with some friends with fraps that have proven that the min. frame rates are better with a Ti4600. There may be a driver that is released by ATI that fixes this, however problem aside, I get flashing textures in games like Hitman 2 and Mafia and I have tried all kinds of different drivers to no avail. There are issues with this card and I really don't blame the testers because managment rushes them to complete a product on schedule. After new years, we should see some more drivers coming out for the Radeon 9700 Pro. I don't hate my card, I am slightly dissapointed. I am not trying to dissuade buyers from getting this product either. What is good for me maybe not be good for others. It's all a matter of opinion and what you want out of a video card. And by the way...Merry Christmas everybody!

As I mentioned in another thread, I was aware of poor min FPS on the Rad9000 series of cards, I hope this isn't a sign of things to come, ie card manus allowing min FPS to suffer so long as they can get high FPS to push the AVERAGE FPS up as they know it is this which gets published! If reviewers start publishing min and max FPS as well as average then hopefully this won't be the case. Another point is the poor performance of Rad9500-9700 with AthlonXP vs the same on P4, even though other cards tend to perform better on the equivilent AthlonXP, these new Rads seem to be an exception. Look at bottom. Are they (cards / drivers) more optimised for P4, perhaps anticipating most reviewers using a fast P4 system?

Hopefully this is all little more than driver issues and optimisations, after all nVidia GF4 cards are simply more efficient, higher clocked 'old' technology and the drivers have had plenty of time to mature. I can say that on my AthlonXP2000+ with GF4TI4200 Hitman 2 is pretty quirky although graphical glitches aren't present there are other issues like occasional crashing and Bump Mapping never truly working. So again, not knocking Radeons but there are some issues coming to light which are minorly concerning ...

Dude, in the review you linked, they are using P4 2.8G vs Athlon 2200+ on Radeon 9700 Pro card. If you compare P4 2.0G to Athlon 2000+, you can see the Radeon 9700 Pro performance on Athlon 2000+ is actually better than P4 2.0G even Athlon is clocked several hundred Mhz lower.

Personally, I switched my Radeon 8500 128MB card from OCed P4 2.4G to Athlon 2400+, I got 500 higher score in 3DMarks2001SE. So, Under same CPU speed, Radeon 9700 Pro actually performance better on Athlon than P4.

IIRC I was more of trying to emphasise the perf diff between:

A Rad9700 and GF4TI4600 on a P4 2ghz and then look at the gap between using a 9700 and 4600 on a XP2000+, the gap between the cards was much smaller on the AMD system ... there are plenty of benchmarks and info to look through in that link. In almost all games the equivilent XP (ie XP2000+ vs P4 2ghz, XP1600+ vs P4 1.6ghz etc) outperforms the P4, and there's a large price diff in the low to medium XP's too!

I like my R9700 Pro. But up until the new directx 9/drivers I had low FPS in UT2K3. Ever since installing the new drivers Ive had alot better results. Higher FPS all the way (minimum, average but not so much on the high side). Anyways, definately get the Radeon 9700 Pro. Its been a solid performer since day one when I got it. Now it just keeps getting better and better with the driver releases.

I recomend the Radeon 9700pro ... I got the OEM .. (cheaper)
I just finished fixing the HSF. (Pad wasnt stuck properly to chip)
So, I replaced it with a blue orb. (wish I had copper one) And stuck some Alpha fins on the mem chips.
I now have a nice overclock too.

345/345 using PS.

I wasnt able to oc any higher than 340c/329m before.

The DX9 and the ATI drivers for it lowered my performance drasticly, to around 14,700
(looked bad visually also - shuttering video and game freeze)

So Im using the 6200C now.
