R9 Fury Versus GTX 980 Revisited

~14% performance from OC, not awesome, but better than the OC on stock vcore.

True. Nano at that price is a good deal. It can match Fury X with a simple +power limit raise.

Here, I can get a Nano for $699 AUD. 980s are $749 AUD.

Most 980Ti are $1149 AUD.

Fury X is $899 AUD.

I've used six Nanos to date (two of which are mine) and they all have coil whine, but it's quite minor and the only reason it's audible at all is because the Nanos are so quiet. I've heard far, far worse on a wide variety of other cards. Really it's a non-issue.

In fact so far my one and only complaint about the Nano is AMD's decision to exclude a DVI port, which means driving a DL-DVI monitor requires an expensive active converter. But that's not going to be a big deal for most people.

My nano does have coil whine but no louder than my Zotac AMP 980ti was. Its acceptable. I remember my Sapphire dual X 7970 whined by just moving the mouse and sounded like a machine gun in game. THAT was bad.

390x can't match a Fury X in performance. The vanilla fury is certainly too close to a 390x. A Nano can come out ahead of a Fury just by moving the power slider. You can find them for $420 now and they are much more efficient power wise. It eliminates buying the Fury or even a 980.

The sad state of things is that it's just smarter all around to buy a nano and a AIO watercooler on deal + a GPU AIO bracket and get the same effective performance as the Fury X for a lot less money. And installing that bracket/AIO takes a pretty trivial amount of time

Thing is there is another 25%-35% extra headroom on top of the Nano + Power Limit = Fury X in a $600 980Ti. You also get 50% more VRAM as a bonus and one of the quietest card around, with 0dBA idle. 980Ti also has the Division which can be sold for $30+. Once you add the cost of an AIO to the Nano and subtract the resale value of the Division from the 980Ti, the price difference between them will shrink closer to $100 but the performance difference will be huge.

From a broader perspective, unless buying for crypto-currency mining, I wouldn't touch anything above a $280-300 970/R9 390 at this time. If AMD only has Polaris 10/11 until Vega 10, chances are they will need to drop prices on the Nano/Fury/Fury X the minute GP104 launches and crushes those cards. If 970's replacement is only as fast as the 980Ti and costs $399, then Fury and 980 cards stand to drop a lot of their resale value. If I had a 980, I'd be selling it right now.

Pfft brackets, ghetto style it with zip ties and a 120mm AIO. Fury X for el-cheapo. lol

Still, you can't argue with RS points. With the 980Ti falling in prices (hello next-gen arriving!), it still is the better deal. Any performance deficit in DX12 can be met with a sizeable OC to catch up.

One of my mates is a "drifter" and the zip ties aren't temporary, they do it because when you hit a gutter you do way less damage to body parts as they just fall off and thus spend way less time fibreglassing things back together.
