What don't you "trust"?

It's a regular 290, not a 290X. On one hand, 290s have a lot of shaders. On the other hand, they don't do double-precision well. Fortunately, I don't think that matters for F@H.

It's a good card. The price isn't the best I've seen, but it's not bad. A 970 would be better if you can find one for a decent price, and it would certainly use less electricity. But a 290's not bad.

Mark,
My R9 290 gets in the neighborhood of 150,000 PPD depending on the project. Right now it is folding one of the 13000 proteins at 151,299 PPD. It is mildly OC'd.

I seem to never get the point production others get, but I am not a serious OCer either.

PS: The 290 and 290X are both Hawaii cores but they are configured differently, I know not how………… but the 290X appears to be the faster of the two.

Wow, and back in the day, I thought the GTX460 1GB card was impressive with 12-16K PPD. (It replaced four 9600GSOs that had about the same output collectively.)

so are those 290x or 290a gpu's ? I thought $270 for 150k would be great, if thats what I get.

My card is simply a R9 290. Have not seen that designation before. I looked at the link and I think the A part is just part of XFX's model number. If you look at the next part of the description it is described as R9 290.

One other thing, I misspoke on PPD. The 150,000 is my stock output. With a mild OC, it is doing about 163,000 on a P13000 wu, fahcore x17.

That 'a' is just part of the XFX SKU; it's an R9 290 -- A Hawaii Pro by any other name would crunch as fast (as opposed to a Hawaii XT 290X, which would crunch slightly faster, but cost substantially more)

These affordable 290s are making me want to upgrade my 7950s... Feels like about time.

So, I got the card, but the drivers won't install. The people on the video forum are not much help. They say that because I run XP 32 bit I should upgrade my OS (works fine for nvidia)

Ideas ?

EDIT: supposedly it does not work with win XP, so I am SOL.

Damn AMD, never buy another,

I'm running all Win 7 and I have not seen any posts re XP. It would not surprise me if the newer drivers do not work with XP.

But I did find out the AMD drivers can be "difficult". Have you run a display driver uninstaller like DDU to make sure all remains of the Nvidia drivers have been removed? If not, I would try that first.

The video forum raked me over the coals.... Its not supported in XP. but its hard to figure that out IMO.

So I do have a win7 box, but I have to setup F@H on it, and the cable is DVI-D only, so I had to order that. No more AMD cards for me. Down for at least another week.

I only just got completely away from XP myself, but I like WIN 7.
I looked on AMD's driver site and the only thing I can suggest at this point is to try the auto-detect tool and see what it gives you.
I did find this statement though: "Another possible reason is that the graphics hardware or operating system has reached end of life and support has been discontinued." So you may have to go to a Windows 7 system to get it running. Just make sure you get the CCC 14.4 or later drivers. Also, if all you are doing is Folding (not gaming) I suggest doing a custom install and just select the drivers part of the package.
