R8500: Software DVD looks better than hardware DVD...why?

As far as I can tell (and this goes for both PowerDVD 4 and ATI DVD player), software mode looks like a progressive scan picture whereas I can see alot of interlacing in scenes with alot of motion when I enable hardware acceleration. I'm guessing that this is just a hardware limitation of the 8500 and there's nothing that can be done about it. It's still strange though. Do any of you experience the same thing?

Wow...it looks like most people agree with me that software looks better. So much for ATI's "Adaptive De-interlacing" that is "supposed" do be done in hardware...

Seriously though, why is there a difference? Can/will drivers fix it?

I didn't have any problem with the quality of DVD's on my R8500 except for a couple of DVD's (the Jin Roh DVD was terrible for this, and I think it had something to do with the encoding).

I notice it on ALL DVDs...it is more noticeable on some than others however.

If you guys have an R8500, do this:

1. Turn on a dvd.

2. Find a scene with a moving object (can be lips...but don't put your mind in the gutter on that one!!).

3. Play the scene at 1/8 speed or pause it (again, keep it clean).

4. Have a gander at the artifacts.

5. Repeat steps 1-4 in software mode.
