Looking to upgrade from fx8320 to 2700x as thats of a less price premium then g3 and still an excellent performing cpu. Theres a price premium for g3 that id like to avoid

Not sure of the chipset I need. Possible to get one that can support ryzen 7 g3 when prices come down in 2-3 years? Dont have money for g3 atm. Not relevant to recommend anything other then 2700x please
Some video editing/ps/games though not a hardcore gamer
I have the gtx980 and will stick with this atm. Not upgrading

-Would like faster support for ssd besides sata3. Nvme?
-maybe down the line jump to 32gb but will start with 16gb ram for now

1-I have a corsair 650w psu.. Good enough?
2-New mb/chipset will require new ram standard vs my old ones used with fx8320?
3-what chipset for the above gear?

You can buy Ryzen 5 3600X for $200 today and I'd personally do that because 2700X is only better in highly multithreaded tasks.

1. more than enough. I'm rocking a 500W PSU with my 3700X. In fact most people buy severely overpowered PSU for no reasons. 650W is enough for 3950X coupled with RTX 2080 Ti.
2. It's either DDR3 or DDR4 which feature physically incompatible sockets. I don't know which RAM you're running but I presume it's DDR3.
3. I'd go with the X570 chipset because it provides higher performance albeit at the cost of a slightly increased power consumption in idle and this chipset will be compatible with Zen3/Ryzen 3000 CPUs as well which is not yet clear about previous gen chipsets.

If X570 chipset based motherboards are too expensive for you (though it's kinda weird since people usually buy motherboards to last for at least 2-3 years, so even $200 is nothing in a long term) you can settle down on X470/B450 motherboards but preferrably the ones which feature 32MB BIOS ROMs. This can be easily found out by visiting the MB support page and checking the BIOS update size.

I have to respectfully decline the ryzen 5 chip. Its more expensive then the r7 Im going to get and will allow me to use a g3 chip down the line

Im tight with money and will opt for a x470. Im scraping pennies trying to get these 3 items. I realize others invest massive sums, I cant allow myself and "saving" isnt the option because I want it now not down the line. Not everyone has sums to plop down. If you came into the photography world and wanted a setup id recommend only with the budget YOU have and not what I'D get.

PSU wattage is plenty, but would be helpful if you listed which model it is. I can't imagine it being too bad though considering it's a Corsair. Maybe I would recommend getting a new one if it's really old, otherwise you should be fine.

Yes you will need DDR4 memory. 3200 CL16 is cost efficient right now. Check your motherboard QVL to make sure the memory kit will work well with the board to avoid issues.

Money being an issue, get a B450 board. The differences between X470 and B450 are minimal. MSI Tomahawk and Bazooka are among the better ones, Asus rog strix is also pretty good and has some better features like Intel LAN and upgraded audio circuitry.

The 2700X is a relatively power hungry CPU, and I wouldn't run it on just any B450. MSI Gaming Pro Carbon is best, Tomahawk and Bazooka are pretty good. You can run a 2700X on an Asrock B450 Pro4 but you'll need some decent VRM airflow for cooling. The top Asus and Gigabyte boards are OK too (don't recall the names atm). X470 doesn't automatically mean better power delivery, some of the bottom X470's have the same (or worse!) VRM design and cooling as the B450's. In X470 I'd start at Asus Prime Pro and better.

2700x is a great CPU and looks like you can get one for $160 from B&H. The 3600 is about $25 more and the 3600X is about $40 more on sale. The 3xxx series is faster in games and lightly threaded stuff, while the 2700x will be faster in heavily threaded applications. I have a 2700x and think it is great.

I run it with an ASRock B450 ITX motherboard. It is a great combination that should be able to easily handle a 3700X and maybe even a 3900X. The VRMs on ITX are usually weak compared to full size motherboards, but still strong enough for stock CPUs. I think that motherboard is ~$90 right now. You will likely need new RAM, but you can get 16 GB of decent stuff for ~$70 right now.

Thanks for the assist guys

Psu says vs650
I have a spare from antrc as well

I won't buy from b&h again. Irs issues and issues with how they treat their "non religous" workers wont get me to biy from them again. No shortage of people to buy from

2700x is selling for $140 on amazon

With shipping to me its much lesd then b&h. Im pinching pennies to buy something so while we can always add $10 here and anothet $20 there, I have to lay a clear cost line I wont pass

2 questions:
1-Can an b450/x470 work with a 3600x when I upgrade in 2 years?

2-I love my thermalright true120 cooler. Ive used it in my q6600 and now the fx8350 and will use it with the 2700x..is there anything abnornal bout the height/ram slots that wont allow ne to use 2 sticks like these corsair? Down the line ill try and get 2 more for 32gb

Is there a reason 1 pack of 2x8gb are $60 while 2 packs are $190?

1-yes

2-depends on the motherboard. From the look of this cooler you'll likely have no issues (re)using it.

No. No one forces you to buy 2 packs for $190. You may as well buy 4 separate sticks of RAM and use them. There's nothing special about RAM packs - they contain just the same RAM modules only packaged by 2 or 4.

You mean the true spirit 120, right? smallish tower cooler?

You'll need an AM4 mount plate for it, other than that I think you're good. There certainly shouldn't be any RAM clearance issues.

Thermalright ultra 120 extreme. 2nd or 3rd revision. Lapped. Sure there are better ones but this never let me down

Ryzen 7 2700x is what im getting. Will stick to those shorter heatsink ram sticks
