Good find. I hope that the retail version isn't too noisy. The noise was the only downside to the X1900XTX, which was otherwise an awesome card. I'm going to guess that the March launch date is accurate, since we usually see the first spy pics about a month before launch. Now we, need some pics of the more reasonably sized models.
 
I'll be skipping this monstrosity.

My Xbox 360 will tide me over until G81 and then I'll decide if PC gaming is worth yet another $600 to me.

I doubt it though. I can't even think about how many thousands of dollars I have spent on my rig in the past 2 years.

And 270W is unsellable, to me at least - this card will be 55db and require a PSU with at least 22.5A per rail or 50A single. Since they don't make many huge single rail PSU's anymore like the $350 Zippy 700, your looking at the 1000 watters as a starting point adding yet more noise and cost.

Good question. I thought air got sucked in by the fan then passed along the card out the back of the case, but I dont see any place where air can get in.

The thing that bugs me the most is why is the OEM version 3" longer than the retail version? Why does it consume 30 more watts? It's not going to be faster, so what gives?

I just hope that the 12.5" card isnt the retail X2800XTX (or whatever it's called) and the 9.5" version isnt the XT/XL flavor.

It has an opening on the bottom. (can be seen by one of the pics) The top seems to be enclosed for some reason.

I'm no HVAC tech but blowers don't work that way. Air is sucked in from center of blower and blades on the wheel push air out in all directions perpendicular to the hole. Hole on the bottom would just push air out too, if it could get in. More I look at pic it looks like there be a plate over hole that "open" and "close". Servo actuated to reduce noise? Fully opening on load on closing on idle? Certainly different. Either way RPM's needed to dissipate 270W of heat will be seriously loud.:thumbsdown:

I must say, though, that the heatsink has a pretty complex heatpipe system. Is that anything what G80's looks like?

isnt the hr-03 larger than that cooler? that heatsink with a 90mm fan is taller but isnt nearly as long. I wonder what the retail version will look like....

Look at x80064's link, on the back side of the card is the opening for the blower. That is the OEM version of the card and will only be available in prebuilt systems. The retail version is 240 watts, not 270.

The VooDoo 6000 is to 3Dfx as R600 is to DAMMIT.

6000 = R600?

The end of 3Dfx = The end of high-end GPUs from DAMMIT?
 
Thanks a lot for those pics sodcha0s. Certainly shows the card in much more detail. The PCB actually looks shorter than the x1950xtx. Extra 4 inches or so is just for the blower which indeed has a hole backside. the whopping 2A!!! fan is of concern to those with the computer in the same room as them.😛

It is not a handle, its a stablizing bracket/extension that was last seen with really large ISA or PCI cards for E-ATX and AT server motherboards.

Older-style ATX cases had a bracket, usually plastic, mounted below the 5.25" and 3.5" drive bays for that extension to slide down into when you seated the card. There is a spec that defines how far away it is from the rear expansion slot plates.

Lies! its one of these, or maybe its to make it easier to carry to LAN parties.

All kidding aside, I'd expect the retail version HSF to be very similar to what's found on the G80, which I believe uses a fan that is also technically a blower. Its not the snail-shaped blow dryer type like on that OEM model though.

Inside the G80's casing, there is a bunch of copper fins and heat pipes. The fan is also very quiet and cools extremely well. Running my 8800GTS right now at 620/950 without any stability issues, although I didn't OC it at all until I moved my rig to a Nine Hundred. Pre-Nine Hundred, GPU temps reported by NV Monitor were 80-85C, after the move, they were 55-60C (OC'd). If the R600 retail sink/fan is anything like the G80s, noise and heat shouldn't be too much of a concern.
