R520 Q3

For those putting off upgrading until next generation, a vague time frame has been given for R520.

"As we reported recently, ATI and NVIDIA may very well introduce their next generation of GPUs at Computex this year. Along with that, ATI may also unveil their Multi-VPU or "SLI" technology at the world?s largest hardware tradeshow as well.

After some of our sources disclosed that information, we were immediately interested in product availability and pricing information on ATI?s upcoming R520 based cards. A source close to ATI?s board partners revealed that R520 based graphics adapters will start appearing on shelves sometime in Q3 or between July ? September timeframe. This would mean that if ATI introduces their R520 at Computex, which will take place in Taipei, Taiwan from May 31st ? June 4th, there?s a minimum of one-month delay before actual products appear on retail shelves. A month timeframe is not too bad when you factor in different aspects, but the real question is the exact timing. Now, appearing in Q3 could mean that cards will be ready for purchase in early July to late September. We can only speculate and hope that ATI (and NVIDIA) will not play the same paper launch game again and have high enough yields of their GPUs to meet the demand. As far as the availability is concerned, this is all the information we have right now.

We also discussed pricing with our sources, but unfortunately, we only a got a broad reply. Since R520 will be ATI?s flagship product line, you can expect the high-end graphics adapters to be more expensive than ATI?s X850 XT PE, which retails around $470.00 on Newegg. That being said, we expect the prices to fall down on the X850 series significantly, therefore, keeping the pricing of R520 prices in a reasonable spectrum. No real surprise here. "

well do u remember ATI and Nvidia giving us the same timeframe last year saying products will hit shelves a month or so after launch??? im not goin to believe this until i start seeing them filling the stores!! "Once bitten twice shy"

These companies have a lot of catching up to do before I am going to believe any dates from them.

It doesn't look like they stated which year's Q3 they were talking about 😉

lol 😛

It's going to be Q3 of '06 before I can afford either one anyway's 🙁

In the meantime i'll keep chugging away on my 6800 Ultra 🙂

me too....hopefully my ultra doesnt get too outdated by that time otherwise i will be forced to get a G70 or R520 whichever is better!!

Oh boy, aren't YOU suffering 🙂 You're 6800 Ultra will be good for at LEAST the next 2 generations of cards, LOL. I'm still running a 9800 Pro 128MB 256bit and I'll tell you what, I haven't met the game yet that can choke it.

Are you using that 9800 to run your gameboy or something? 😕

Video cards are all about personal standards, other hardware, and finances. If this guy has a 17" monitor or plays at 1024x768 then a 9800 pro is fine. On the otherhand, there are people running Dell2405FPW's at native resolution, which would require a little more power.

Either way, a launch of the next gen cards is always cool, it drives down the price on current cards and a performance increase is always welcome. Even with a 6800GT, I can't run max on every current game at 1680x1050, plus I think it might be time to transition to PCIe with this coming generation of cards.

yup...the transition to PCI-e has to be made some time or the other...how long can u cling to that AGP system!!! although PCI-e offers no improvement whatsoever at the moment it is the way to go!!

Well that's what you have the summer vacation for. If you get a parttime job for a few weks you will easily be able to buy a new card. For me iv'e skipped the current generation of cards so i'm going to buy a next gen card as soon as i can get my hands on one. Let's hope Ati and Nvidia will have learned something and that i don't have to wait to long...

Next-gen on the shelves just only one month after Computex? Screw that, I bet the cards won't even appear after 6 months at least.

For sure. It was just a little gentle ribbing. Although I owned a 9800P as well and it did start 'choking' up on me pretty quick with the newer titles.
