R520 may see 700MHz core.

ATI- please don't release a card with fewer pipes and try to compete with "ultra" high clocks.... sigh. Good thing I don't plan to buy another video card until at least christmas time, maybe then prices will be lower for both parties.

Lets just hope it is good enough that Nvidia has to release the 7800U :)

Great.

This is just the opposite of what I was hoping for (clockspeed instead of pipes), lets just hope they don't also slap on a leafblower on top to keep it cool.

Wow, this is exactly what I was expecting! w00t! 16 x-treme pipes ought to beat out a 32/24-pipe nVidia card.

if its 16 pipes i guess 700mhz+ would be the only way to compete but its seems strange that they wouldnt put atleast 24 in. its the inquirer after all so we cant take this info for granted.

It's not really that strange... it's ATi. ATi has been known to make sub-par graphics cards in crunch times, and with the Xbox 360 debuting, this is definitely a crunch time.

This is stupid, I hope ATi is not going this way, it's starting to look like Intel vs AMD. I like more pipes+lower clock speeds better than high clocks with less pipes... It must be a very hot chip if that's true...

Maybe they're just in a rush to get it released. Not a good thing, but at least they might have SOMETHING to compete with the gf7800. I certainly hope they don't continue this trend - the clockspeed can only go up so high.

No. This possibility exists for a long time now. An "insider" (not from ATI) who knows many things had told me that 3 months ago. I just don't want to believe it. ...

Yeah, the Inq has just thrown out every idea possible know with R520, there's no telling what it's going to be know. All I know is, it better be really good, or ATi has spent the last 4 months shooting themselves in the foot.

This may all make sense in the long run? The inquirer, if I recall correctly, was spitting out news on ATI last gen cards before their release. I remember hearing 12 pipes and then 16 pipes..... nobody really new what the top card would actually be. I wonder if the Canadians are throwing things out there to see reactions & keep Nvidia and us from pinning their real card down.

With the 400 series they had 8 / 12 / 16 pipe parts. I wonder if this time they will have all three 32 / 24 / 16..... 16 being equivalent to a PRO 24 = XL and 32 = XT/PE.

This would make some sense rather than the 3 different pipe number announcements we have seen from the Inquirer..... if I remember correctly this is exactly what happened last time....... all pipe counts were correct.

Why don't you guys wait to see the performance rather than flying off the handle? Some of you are so two faced at times...

Somebody needs a time out. Don't bring animosity to an otherwise benign thread. Thanks

I agree with the point but it was poorly conveyed.

I dont see what the fuss is about. Who cares whether it has 16, 24 or 32 pipes? As long as ATI deliver a competitive product, Im not bothered how many pipes it has.

Man some of you people complaining are not making any sense..... Less pipes equals less cost. So if its as fast or faster than a 7800 at a lower cost whats the problem? Relatitivity people!

I mean what is wrong with a higher clocked sixteen pipe chip if its as fast or faster than a twenty four or thirty two pipe chip that is clocked lower. And think about what this opens the door for?

A 32 pipe 700+ mhz Ati Monster. If anything, seeing chips clock this high and getting good yields can only be a good thing.
