R520 Junk or Marketing Asleep at the wheel?

Anyone else wondering why ATI isnt talking about the R520 yet? Specs? Nothing? Especially since the chip is tapped out? I cant find anything on this chip still.

I can only draw 3 conclusions.

1. They want to try and sell off as much X700 & X800 inventory stockpiles as possible and fear if you know what the R520 will do you wont buy one of them?

2. The chip isnt that great and doesnt want to draw attention to itself. Thus another Tap out is in the mix.

3. Its going to be delayed even longer than expected because of who knows what? Maybe SLI doesnt work on R520?

I am holding out as long as I can but we should seriously know something concrete about R520 already.

I already know a few people who are saying they will wait to see what R600 will do because its only about 6 months away now and if we get the 6 month product cycle then NVIDIA next chip is about 4.5 - 5 months away now or less. At this pace we will know the chip specs of ATI's next card before we hear anything.

Anyone? Links? Specs? Samples sent out yet? Beuller? Beuller?

I believe ATI and NVidia both went to 12 month product cycles.

For a chip thats rumored to be shipping before year's end, we know surprisely litter about the R520. :(

I'm guessing that ATI knows they can't paper launch like last time because nVidia has forced their hand with two consecutive product launches.

I bet we don't get to know anything of R520 till we can buy one.

When is the projected launch date? They must have some target. Anyways, if it doesn't launch this month and ends up in September or October, it better be a hella lot better than the 7800GTX... or ATI is screwed.

If they don't get it out soon or if it's outperformed by the 7800GTX, they shouldn't expect to have any profits anytime soon. :p

I agree with Rollo.

Personally, I dont mind a paper launch, as long as they set a "real" launch date. And have cards available on that date. Getting an earlier look at hardware is only a good thing to me.

Personally, I'm starting to think just the shrink to 90nm is going to give them enough clock to take back the top position.

Can't say much about features supported though - SM3.0 and so forth.

Well i know this has come from the inquirer but,

ATi have sent sample card of their RV515 and RV530 cards, the low and mainstream versions of the R520 card. They are flying abouts in Taiwan, and it has said to be that ATi has plenty of stock for both those cards, all they are doing is to release the R520 which as of now is getting stockpiled so they can do a hard launch. They wanna release the R520 first before the rest of the line supposedly.

Perhaps they are waiting for an nVidia marketing campaign where nVidia advertises all the R520's new features for them. Oh wait...

They're playing the game like the Nintendo Revolution. Not that much information was released about the Revolution at E3(specs, games, etc.)

2 reasons. 1.) the chip has been delayed due to problems with the 90nm die process. 2.)Because NVIDIA hard launched the 7800 series, ATI knows they will get slammed for another paper launch.

Actually, I'd say it was US, the public, who forced both nVidia and ATI to pull the plug on paper launches. There was such an overwhelming backlash from people who couldn't purchase a card six months after it was supposedly available that it sent their Marketing Departments scrambling for cover.

You might not be able to hear the release dates or specs of the R520 because ATI wishes to keep it a secret from Nvidia. They do not want Nvidia to know the specs early, which would give Nvidia time to bring out the ultra (or something similiar). ATI would most likely not release any info until the card have been released.

They're making them now. From rumored specs, the 7 series will be owned. Since ATI usually beats Nvidia (not talking SM here), with SM3, if the R520 isn't too expensive, theres no reason to get a 7800gtx...

but its rumors

It's better to have no "talk" and have "show" then we can "talk" to death about the cards when it is out there.

I would say that the r520 is not quite as good as the 7800gtx and Ati is scrambling to catch up. The Ati mid range is supposed to be good with nice yields, so they should hurry up and release them.

I don't think that's the case. I just think that ATI has a card that can compete if not better the nvidia cards, but they are just trying to make a good supply of their cards when they launch them.

ATI is going to be on par, probably a little better than the 7800GTX. Not bad, but months after the 7800GTX launch? I think ATI's mighty R520 is gonna become a dud when it should have been king, if it had been launched alongside the 7800GTX that is.

Nvidia has the 7800 Ultra sitting in their laps, waiting for R520. They've already established the mainstream (7800GT) and the high-end (7800GTX). Once R520 is released, they'll let the Ultra loose and have a next gen card for lower mid-range (7800GT), higher mid-range (7800GTX) and high-end (7800 Ultra). Not to mention 6800GTs and 6800 Ultras are gonna sell like hot-cakes once they reach the low-end.

BTW, I think crossfire is a dud and ATI is crapping their pants. Without crossfire, they can't compete with nvidia

I think the X800 series and up are corssfire capable, I know I can get a $100 rebate if I buy another X800XL...
