I have a feeling that this will be another infamous paper-launch from ATI;
i.e., they will be getting out a good number of Pro versions with 24 vertex pipes, and then ship a few hundred XTs to select tier-one vendors like newegg/monarch/etc, and then stop and wait for significantly better yields. This will probably mean that there will be zero to little availability of the top end cards for another 30-60 days after launch.

You gotta hand it to Nvidia this time, they executed beautifully this time around. If ATI's part is not faster than the 7800GTX they will face a lot more problems than they can ever imagine.
I don't think it matters if it is faster or not. By the time a faster product from ATi comes along (you have to put that, with current information, in the September/October timeframe), nVidia will have had two well polished, high end cards out for a good 3 to 4 months. You can get a GTX from MSI for around 479 and an eVGA retail card, pre-overclocked, for under 500. I am sure the GT's will be down under 350 by the time ATi has anything out. So unless ATi sells their cards for cheap, which would mean a major loss in money, I don't think it matters if it's faster or not. They need something out now and the preposed R530 and R515 just aren't going to cut it as nVidia has had comparable products to those out for awhile now, and a 6800GT, for about 250, will probably be as good as the R530 (mainly due to its 256-bit interface and higher memory bandwidth). The point being, ATi is going to lose money since they are so far behind, even if their card does in fact turn out superior. Anything they release nVidia can counter if they wish, as I doubt nVidia has just been sitting around waiting for ATi's answer. On top of that, nVidia has will have had 3 or 4 months to stock up on mid range 7 series cards if they so desire, and hard launch them in late September, in time for the holiday season.

Do not agree with that statement. Remember when ATI didn't make anything to compete with? LOL, I remember that crappy azz rage II card and stuff. nVidia was dominating for a few years and ATI came out of nowhere and played at their level.
So, even if ATI does fall behind this match and next and the next, they still have a shot at taking the lead back sometime in the future.
Though I am not an engineer, both nVidia and ATI have the same technology at their fingertips, and therefore, I do not believe either one of them will completely dominate the other again. I think we are in an Intel Versus AMD contest that will go around for years to come... First one to file chapter 11 loses 😀
Nah, leakage is independent of clock speed. It's a by product of their process parameters, and the finer 90nm technology that they're using. They probably aren't doing a lot of manual circuit layout/etc, instead opting for standard libraries, which aren't that optimized. Perhaps a lack of power management features like clock gating/etc also. GPUs have a much shorter life and correspondingl a much faster development cycle and hence they aren't tweaked as much as CPUs.
Im still wondering where the heck are the Motherboard chips for SLI and where are the Master Video cards for SLI?

Even if the R520 is released there is still no SLI/CROSSFIRE without the motherboard chips from ATI.
Even if R520 is released at lower than expected speeds/pipes thats good because sub $200 cards are the biggest sellers. At least there is some return on investment even if sold at a loss they arent sales to NVIDIA.
ATI must be having some major problems even if they arent posting something on their website that says CHECK BACK SEPTEMBER WHATEVER.
There are no leaks from vendors on up and coming motherboards which means they still dont exist. There is always a leak to generate excitement.

did you even read my quote. i said "this time around", and yes if ATI loses this round they will be facing many problems to come. nvidia is starting to gain a lot of ground in the OEM market, which used to be ATI dominated. ATI is just losing all around, and if you think that isn't a problem then......

Just for a little historical accuracy here, nVidia paer launced/announced the 6800 before ATI announced the X800 and shipped it AFTER the X800. The X800 XT PE was the card that did not ship in significant numbers and Gateway helped make this a huge sore point because the promised to ship lots more than ATI could make (ATI's fault for supply, GW2K's for poor customer service).
And for the record, nVidia had a master stroke getting the 7800 ready and keeping the movement of parts into the supply chain quiet until the announcement day. Totallly caught ATI flat-footed expecting another paper launch, which they were prepared to match within weeks. The next generation release will be just as interesting as nVidia will only get away with it once. I do wonder what both marketing teams are preparing for us next year 😉
