R520 Faster Than G70 and 6800U SLI

From the Inquirer:

DESPITE WHAT people were claiming, the G70 will score better than the 7800. The card never got the 7800 suffix based on its 3Dmark05 score and if it was number would end up significantly bigger. It's actually going to be quite better but still not as good as the "Fudo" R520.

We got some numbers from this card and it turns out that R520 scores more than 10000 in 3Dmark05. We still don't know its clock speeds but we know the score. For what we know Nvidia can not mach this with G70.

This is actually even better or equal to two 6800 Ultra cards in SLI which kinds of makes it looks ridiculously fast. Imagine R520 in Crossfire, what ATI "cool chap" described as "Coolest technology ever" could do? Just double the number please.

No question that R520, Fudo will be fast the only questions remains are when is it going to be out and when it will actually be available. We will hopefully found out more soon.

Me too. I had an eVGA 6800NU that I got for $200 a month after launch, and it softmodded and overclocked like a mother. I became interested in the possibilities of a high Venice overclock (was coming from a 2.53ghz A64 Sempron 2800+) and figured I should just make the PCI-e jump and grab something really nice from this upcoming generation. So, I tossed a Leadtek 6200 PCI-e card into my rig as a temporary cheap solution. It softmods, but I miss the power of my old card. Can't wait for this next gen!

That would really be some good news. I've been pricing out a new rig lately, and if it turns our being an SLI/Crossfire rig the cost would really be a tad higher than I would like to spend. Everything is expensive: A64 X2, new mobo for pcie, new psu, plus the new cards (est. $400-550 ea)... If the next gen cards are faster than either current SLI or Crossfire there would be little incentive to even consider either as an alternative. The only time that multi-card solutiuons become realistic is when chipmakers hit a wall and can't build them faster anymore.

Sweet about AGP. I am happy with my current setup and do not want to change anything except vid card...and that is a must seeing how I jsut fried mine.

A paper launch is the only you will find for either of the cards...no telling when you will be able to get your hands on either of them. So now wOOt for anyone in my book..

Not sure why you say this is a paper launch? As far as I know ATI hasn't claimed to be launched R520 yet.

Everything is fine and dandy except:

1) what matters is availability;
2) pricing -- (probably not reasonable for at least 2 months after introduction);
3) gaming benchmarks -- (not 3dmark because it often has no correlation with real world games);
4) games that help to push new cards to the limit -- (not likely for another year).

Or how he knows for certain that nVidia will have a decent supply of cards in retail channels.
Sounds like fanboyism to me, I would only believe it to be true when I see it (either a real launch from nVidia or paper launch from ATi, I would expect paper launches from both, since whenever they say "no paper launches" they paper launch).

Sick of people saying 'calling BS on this until its released'. Thanks for stating the obvious, but if you don't care/don't want to discuss it why bother replying? It's as annoying as 'first post'. It's not news that this is just speculation. Everybody and their mother already knows how credible The Inquirer is. We can't confirm if it's true or not. We know we can't until it's officially released. But thats not what we're discussing. We're commenting about this should it be true. This isn't just directed to Insomniak but everyone who does this obviously. http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/images/opinion1.gif

lol

Anyway-
Even if the G70 reaches 9000 3dmark05s I wouldn't be disappointed...and 3dmark isn't everything anyway, so even if the G70/R520 does get more in 3dmark that doesn't mean it'll get more in games in general.

I don't doubt that the clock speed is faster. That's a no-brainer. However performance-wise....
This is from The Inquirer..take it with a grain of salt and then some.

Either way it will be interesting what the result is when both companies unleash their guns. It's certainly been a relatively boring few weeks save for DC.

Now all we need are games that will tax these video cards. And I'm not talking about only one or two games. Myself, I think i'll wait for the Ageia physics eng., before I get too excited.

oh, fanboyism...whatever. What I am saying is that we will probably be seeing a paper launch of the nvidia cards with good availablity (crosses fingers) a couple months later, by this fall. ATI seems to be leaking rumors to try and steal some of the thunder...good marketing move, but the last round of launches left me disapointed with ATI. You're talking to a guy whose buying habits went:

8500 (right when released, hell I had to install different drivers for different games)
9500 Pro - 1.5 years of kick butt performance, $130 retail BBA from BB clearance
9800 Pro - 2 months, got owned by Doom 3

Where is my X800? No where to be found, maybe I should try nvidia...
6800 - 6 months, Power! Drivers! No more installing third party apps for custom resolutions and OC'ing! Yes!
6800 Ultra AGP - 3 months, Power! Price! Sold!
6600 PCIe - waiting for next gen...

Anyway... I buy what is fastest for the price. In PCIe I would not hesistate to buy an 800XL if I needed to play some serious games. I just think that, for the upcoming generation, nvidia will probably ultimately be slower on the highest end but easier to get. With any luck they will also be cheaper whenever ATI manages to get their "monster" out the door and in our hands.

I truly hope that we see the performance jump like when the 9700 Pro came out and when the 6800's were launched!

I read a report earlier today that Nvidia has already sent out G70s to the major manufacturers, who are cranking to get them ready for the release date later this month. So it doesn't look like a paper launch, at least for the G70. The R520 won't be announced until late July, and hopefully they will follow suit.

You say my english is poor, the article writes "mach with the G70". Now WTF is mach. Seems inquirer is fooling us all 😀

Mach

EDIT: In case that's missleading, the quote from the Inq was: "For what we know Nvidia can not mach this with G70."

This would be a reference to mach as in "the F-15 can reach speeds over Mach 2" with Mach being a reference to the speed of sound (Mach 2 = 2x speed of sound for instance).

So, either they left the T out of "match" or they were using "mach" with a deeper meaning.

Oh boy....ATI is better than Nvidia once again...and this proves that??? Hasn't ATI usually had a slight shader performance over Nvidia? It's just that SM3 sounded so good, that's why i got a 6600gt (plus its the best card for the price)...

woot ATI...it's still just a rumor.
