I doubt it!
The Radeon 9700Pro was at least twice as fast as nVidia's GeForce Ti4600 when it was released. :)

Only in high resolutions with AA/AF on. With no AA or AF it was more like 30-40% faster.

The 9700 PRO was at least 2x as fast as the 8500 though, so it is possible to make that kind of jump from one generation to the next.

Again, only in high resolutions and with AA/AF. I would say more like "up to 2X as fast".

It's hard to find a comparison of the two... here's one: sharky extreme .

For example:

Quake 3 at 1024x768
Radeon 8500: 235fps
Radeon 9700Pro: 303fps

1280X1024
Radeon 8500: 165fps
Radeon 9700 Pro: 283fps

1600X1200
Radeon 8500: 122fps
Radeon 9700Pro: 223 fps

In terms of raw GPU power the Radeon 9700Pro is not 2X faster than the 8500 - it's more like 30-75% faster.

With eye candy (ie AA/AF) it is definately 2X faster, often more because of the superior AA/AF capabilities.

However, unless ATI and Nvidia come up with vastly superior methods of AA and AF on their new cards (and it doesn't look like that's their focus this time) these new cards won't be 2X faster than the old ones. Look at the trend - they will probably be in the ballpark of 30-75% faster .

Depends on which game you looked at. 9700Pro <Ti4200 in NWN :)

Current rumours put the R420 at a 12x1 config which means I'd expect it to be somewhere in the vicinity of 25-50% faster depending on how much more RAM bandwidth is on the card.

Maybe twice AS fast, not two times FASTER.

Err...

indeed.

yep

If card A gets a score of 200 on <insert benchmark name here> and card B gets a score of 400, then card B is twice as fast as card A. Which means that it's 100% faster than card A. If it was two times faster than card A it would get a score of 600.

B is ScoreB/ScoreA as fast as A.
B is (ScoreB/ScoreA - 1) times faster than A.

Someone please tell me if this is true?? It seems too good to be true!

All I can say is I will be saving for that even if it's a grand. Suck on that Nvidia

Also, back on the issue - Nvidia is not sitting on their laurels here. NV40 should be out around the same time as R420 (give or take a couple months ... probably give because I'm not sure NV40 has taped out yet, while I think R420 has).

And for the price - it most definately won't be a grand. $399 to $499 are what the Pro/Ultra/whatever they name it version should cost at launch, based on the trends.

This will be the true test of ATI's mettle - if the 9700 design was a fluke or just a sign of thinks to come from ATI's new leadership under Dave Orton. Here's hoping on the latter ;).

AA started waaaay back in the 3DFX days when the Voodoo5 series cards came out. After that, AA was here to stay. It was just a question of were you willing to take the performance hit. ALOT of people bought the GeForce TI4600 to play games WITH AA on. I don't think anyone bought the TI4600 and didn't try using AA.

Anyway, let's get down to the nitty gritty.
Benchmarks:
AquaMark V23 - 1024x768 4X AA
Radeon 9700 Pro - 61.9 FPS
GeForce TI4600 - 26.4 FPS

AquaMark V23 - 1280x1024 4X AA
Radeon 9700 Pro - 42.9 FPS
GeForce TI4600 - 17 FPS

Quake 3 - 1280x1024 4X AA & 16X FAA
Radeon 9700Pro - 152.3 FPS
GeForce TI4600 - 63.4 FPS

The Radeon 9700 Pro doesn't score 2X as fast across the board, but I don't EVER recall a video card EVER beating the previous generation of cards this bad. You can't throw out AA scores because after all, that is why you pay $300-$400 for a top of the line video card, to play games with ALL the eye candy.

Man that article is old. They even rumored the 420 to have at least a prototype release in late 2003...lol. Well considering it's almost Winter with no new news on the 420, I seriously doubt the thing will be released no earlier then spring of 2004.

Does it even exist?
