R420 to be 2X Faster than 9800 Pro????

No way that Loki is going to be on a 0.15 micron process, i'd say 0.13 to start moving to 0.11 in a product refresh in about a year.

sweet, can you say 9800 Pro for $150 when this thing rolls out?

no it wont, buy that time it will be discontinued so it wont be that cheap. just look at the 9700 pro. more than a year after release you cant even find it for less than $225

well thats because the card performs almost as well as the 9800XT. if the r420 is 2X faster, then i think it will be 150

Haven't we all heard this before?

The next gen hardware from nVidia and ATi is always "n times faster", and once it shows up, it turns out that it is indeed, as long as you use a few select benches to test it, while being anywhere from 15-50% faster in games/apps that most people use.

Not slamming ATi or anything, Im just slamming marketing in general 🙂

Just like the 9600XT is faster then the 9700Pro? 😉

On a more serious note-

As we revealed earlier, it will incorporate 110 to 150 million of transistors (see this news-story) and will support Pixel and Vertex Shaders 3.0. I expect the part to feature 8 rendering pipelines with 2 texture modules per each or 16 pipelines with 1 texture module per pipe. Its architecture will have much in common with the original R300 and R350/R360.

Something in what I quoted above is wrong, not sure which part but it all doesn't fit together(features, configuration, basic core layout and transistor count).

I've heard several sources (all rumors) saying there will be a 12x1 configuration for high-end R4XX, not 16x1. NVIDIA may be going with an 8x2 setup (again, just rumors).

I doubt it! Was the PII twice as fast as the pentium on release? Was the P3 twice as fast as the PII on release? Was the Ti4600 twice as fast as the Ti500 on release?

I doubt it!

If we had some accurate specs on the R420, we could at least try to guess what it will do. Until then, we can't know. Could be 12 pipes, could be 16 pipes, and that alone would be a major difference. Same goes for the NV40. Does anyone know what it will surface with?

Maybe twice AS fast, not two times FASTER.

Err... 😕

indeed.

This article is five months old. If you want more current rumors, hit up Uttar's NFI: GPU:RW (Google for it).

Current rumors put the R420 at basically three RV350 cores (12x1), plus the inevitable tweaks. Not twice as fast all the time, but it's possible it'll be twice as fast in certain situations.

They may be saying that the specs are double ex. 16 pipelines would lead one to believe twice as fast, but I doubt it. And if it is twice as fast it will only be at the highest res. with AA and AF enabled.

The Radeon 9700Pro was at least twice as fast as nVidia's GeForce Ti4600 when it was released. 🙂

The 9700 Pro was only twice as fast as the Ti 4600 at high res and with AA and AF enabled. And not all tests showed that the performance was doubled. It wasn't at least, it was at max.

Only in high resolutions with AA/AF on. With no AA or AF it was more like 30-40% faster.
