No who was crazy enough to buy Parhelia?? Where's Amish? :D

"Those of you with parhelia's just bought a nice little paperweight... "

(I'm just kidding around, if you're happy with your parhelia, congrats =)

Great performance. Still, I have to admit I'm a little disappointed that theres no $199 and $299 version to match, as with the GF4

Well someone has reported seeing a $350 price tag at Best Buy for the Radeon 9700 (My guess is that will be a preorder price)

And then there was the mysterious reference to the Radeon 9500 at the product launch (The hour long video is available on ATI's website) It was mentioned in the context of being out before the end of the year and that the details of it were a secret. It could well be the next midrange card.

drivers look to be good since they are not based upon the older radeon base. They are a totally new base of drivers.

The R300 is a great card from what I have read so far, if the drivers and support are there, they will have a winner.

OMFG... just got back on the net after finishing my mod... HOLY COW! The R300 kicks some serious a$$. It really doesnt matter how well NV30 does, this core will still be a decent alternative to Nvidia. And competition is always easy on the wallet.

Color me impressed.

WOW!!!! The graphics industry is getting really exciting. It is fun to see all these cards coming out with each one having so much power, especially this one.

I'll wait for the Radeon 9500, perhaps I can afford to replace my geforce DDR with it. If anything else, Microsoft's next OS need a good 3d card, at least DX 8.0 support?

Longhorn will use DX9. It will treat each window as a texture and will be very GPU dependant.

I'm a little confused about the 9000. Bogus naming aside (both ATI and nVidia do it, 9000 slower than 8500 and those "mx" cards) it seems like the timing is off here bringing out a slower card quite awhile after the 8500 arrived. Then again GF4MX's do sell nicely though I wonder how many of those purchases would be regretted and returned if people realized how un-GF4 the MX is. There it's the GeForce name selling it, Radeon name's not nearly as established and as for people recognizing the "V" in the chip name, well, it seems just as shady without as much chance of success. (IE: "Yeah, I heard how the 9000 series are slower than the 8500's." "But what about this 9700?" "Dunno, buddy told me 9000's are slower so it probably is too") Also the pricing, is removing one one texture unit from each pixel pipeline and thereby reducing core size enough to cut their cost by $40 or whatever? Heck 8500LE's are already under that $129/$109 price cited in Anand's article and the LE's faster in most everything, not to mention the straight 8500's. 8500LE's and GF4MX cards are priced about the same at Newegg already, unless 129/109 means street prices of $95/$70 I don't see how it's going to dent the GF4 anymore than the current lowest cost 8500/LE's.

I hope the 9000 makes ATI a bundle of money in OEM channels, just hate to see it cause the kind of consumer confusion/irritation that haunts companies for years. Kinda like people still bringing up the drivers for their AIW Rage 128s. Unless I'm totally missing some great new benefit of the 9000's which means they've managed to confuse me and my point would still hold...

9700 though, wow. Very nice. Nicely done.

"How's the 2d?"

That certainly is the question to ask when taking part in any thread about any video card. That's kind of like saying "It's probably the alternator" when someone tells you their car has an electrical problem. When are you people going to let go of what used to be?

ATI will be getting $400 bucks of my hard earned money next month, the 9700 is down right beautiful.
I havent felt that good reading a hardware article in a long time....
I have a feeling Matrox will be joining 3DFX in that big Fab in the sky soon if they dont get a lower priced, better performing part. Soon.

:Q WOW!!! Very nice. This card will come out in time for UT2K3 which is a next generation game. I see in the benchies for the outdoor level of Unreal Tournament 2003 that the R300 is 38% - 54% faster than the Geforce4 ti4600. This is most important because the outdoor levels is where there is the most drop in frame rate.

It looks to me the R300 replaces 32 bit color with what they are calling floating point color. Correct me if I'm wrong. If this is the case then that would be the end of any banding in the fog effects.

Instead of only having 256 values per component, each color component can now be represented by, in effect, an unlimited number of values, giving you a truly dynamic range of brightness.

This alone would be a major improvement in image quality. No more bad looking skys, fog, smoke, shading.

and i'll bet you can add custom resolutions via powerstrip, something i haven't been able to do with my GF since the det 4s.

i will wait for benchmarks comparing speed and image quality of the NV30 <-> R300.
(I am not in a hurry to upgrade besides i dont have the money nor the need right now :)

But...i am getting worried that my overclocked AMD1800+ (running at 1610MHZ) is getting already too SLOW !!!!!!!!!!!
What machine on earth should "drive" those monsters of a graphicscard ???? 2.4MHZ or 2.8MHZ PIVs ???? Comes the NV30 we will probably head toward 4GHZ or more.......

with AGP 8x and such this rather looks like a MAJOR upgrade to me....otherwise it would be like putting racing tires on
a vw beetle and expecting it going 200mph....

Anyway....congrats to ATI...the anand article and performance was not less of what i expected the R300 to be !!!
