Just think, Nvidia will respond. GTX780s will be cheaper. There will be a 780ti. The landscape is shaping before our very eyes.
For those in the middle, they now have great options for the top end. More than ever.
The only issue really is the 290x seems to be sold out everywhere. Is it from limited supply or is the card an unexpected hit? We need these cards available or Nvidia will drag their feet on dropping prices. The sooner the better.
Regardless, they will have to lower prices because of the 290x. I have absolutely nothing but smiles for that.

But Titan users are butthurt this card offers the same performance for half the price, so they try to defend their dear card any way they can
I dont even get it, Titan has been the exclusive fastest card for 8 months, and you couldnt possibly have thought paying a grand for a card would ever be good value... you had to know this was coming

And I dont believe anyone with a brain has bought a Titan lately considering those Oc 780s are much better anyway

Complain about the temps and noise and all you want, doesnt change the fact the card sold out everywhere in a matter of minutes (yes yes, obviously it was because of short supply, obviously)

Titan is still a better overall card until some aftermarket cooling for 290x shows up.

The reference cooler is terrible on this one. Doesn't help that it's fairly power hungry.

No. It gets spanked at the most taxing resolutions. It's a lesser card. I rescind my $400 offer for one. It's not worth that much.
 
Has there been a SINGLE confirmation of an aftermarket cooler being offered by 3rd party OEM partners? Or is this all just wishful thinking?

Pretty much wishful thinking because that is the angle that has to be played to keep from spoiling the party.

It's a shame really, because the 290X as a GPU core is very powerful...it's just in a judo lock with that cooler atm.

The thing I find interesting though is the angle used against the 760 in favor of the 7950...overclock it and it whoops it's tail!...is suddenly being abandoned since overclocked 780s are proving to stand up to the 290X very well, which due to it's heat constraints does not have much, if any, overclock headroom.

Yeah wishful thinking that these partners don't want to slap on a cooler on a 290x.

I don't need lecturing on who the quality AIB's are. However, it was stated at one time that non-reference coolers were not going to be allowed on the 290X. The 290? Yes, but not the 290X. Hopefully that is not accurate because it needs one. I'm sure MSI, Asus, and Gigabyte would love to put their very good heatsinks/fans on the 290X if allowed.

You can buy whatever you want. It's your money. Or, you could wait for Nvidia to drop the price of the 780...overclock it...and get a faster card. It's really up to you. It's just a GPU, and decent one as well even though is does run as hot as the infamous 480 back in the day that AMD 'fans' poked fun at...but hey, it's not a real life penis extension like so many wish...as mentioned. It's just a GPU. Just something to play games on a computer.

No need to at this point, that's what the 780 and soon 780 Ti are for. And its not just the cooler that deserves the blame, its the core itself that runs at boiling temps. But its funny seeing so many AMD apologists making excuses, "but once it gets an aftermarket cooler, LOOK OUT NVIDIA!" lol too funny. I wonder how long it will be before the super hot operating temp of the core ends up killing the rest of the parts on the card in a poorly ventilated case? I'm sure it will happen sooner rather than later.

That's like impossible lol. There's already EK waterblocks available on day one for the 290X you would be a fool to think non-reference cooled cards are not on the way...

The card is definitely thermally constrained, I wouldn't look at the overclocking potential of GTX 780 as solace just yet. I want to see how this card performs when we put it under water 😎 .

Voltage is unlocked right? I don't want AMD to adopt that GPU boost crap.

It's not an assumption. It was stated several weeks back at the announcement in Hawaii. Things may have changed however.

Waterblocks are different, but hopefully AIB's are going to have permission to use their coolers. There is a reason why TechPowerUp stated what they did in their conclusion. The 290X is a great card...it's just needs a more efficient cooler to take advantage of what it has to offer. Otherwise, overclocked 780s will continue to beat it.

I find this hard to believe considering the 290X is severely limited by it's cooler. Do you have a link of the confirmation? I'm just curious because that seems like a really stupid thing to do.

Naahh, might as well run R9 290x at full throttle and pretend you're at a construction site:

AMD's stock cooler is completely overwhelmed with the heat output of the card during voltage tweaking, though. Even at 100%, it could barely keep the card from overheating and was noisier than any cooler I've ever experienced. My neighbors actually complained, asking why I used power tools that late at night.

So what reason do you have to believe AMD would purposefully LOCK out AIBs from making custom cooling models? Given what we know: 1) Ref is crap and inadequate, and 2) throughout the previous gens, AMD has always encouraged a wide range of custom AIB models as a way for their partners to differentiate. 3) Only NV in recent times have lock-out their designs.

I don't have a reason one way or another. I just keep seeing so many references to these mythical coolers that I wanted to see a press release from one of AMD's partners stating that they are on the way and should be here shortly. And I want to know the cost of added bulkier cooling. Will it add $20? $30? $50? Because each dollar added to the price reduces the value of this card vs 780.
