R Statistics Software...

I'm just taking an intro to stats course at the UW, and I've been talking to my TA about some different stats software packages. I'm checking out R right now... and I'm completely confused. Is there anyone here who has used R before, knows what it's about, etc... or anyone that has a link to a complete beginner's guide?
