R Read - "Our semi-custom APUs" = Xbox 720 + PS4?

Wouldn't this recent guidance statement by Rory Read - "Our semi-custom APUs already have a number of confidential high-volume design wins in place" - just about have to be referring to the Xbox 360 and PS4?

If so wouldn't upcoming AMD APUs have a huge advantage in running next gen games leaving Nvidia out in the cold?

If true then it should help ensure good default performance in PC game titles during that generation of consoles, especially so in direct ports.

We havent exactly seen any Xbox360 game run better on AMD GPUs than nVidia. Or the other way around with PS3.

Plus I doubt that statement got anything to do with PS4 or Xbox720. Those consoles are also still too far out in the future.

Well, my statement is if it's true that full AMD x86 APUs will be in those consoles. Much more likely to have benefits for ports and dual PC-Console development than the current batch of consoles.

Consoles will probably be out next year so they should be mostly complete by now and I think the point is since both companies are using AMD they should be "optimized" by default and on another note hopefully using x86 cpus benefits us all.

Never thought of AMD having the edge in console ports for PC game performance in the future. I guess it would be possible. I will more than likely dump my 670 for an 8970 when it releases... unless its $549 at launch.

Early console rumors are usually wrong. I hope they use something more powerful than an APU

from what I'm reading, the next xbox could well be released 1 year from now, and if that's the case the specs are pretty much finalized I would think,

there are strong rumors linking both the MS and Sony console to next gen APUs or at least GCN GPUs

While Ms is obviously positioning to go closed system in the longer term, in the nearer term it finds itself in an all out 'ecosystem' mindshare brawl with Apple and Google, putting it, one might presume, in an 'all hands on deck' mindset, including it's long time red headed step child - Windows gaming.

Hopefully this results in far fewer console only first party, though it might release those games for Metro only via WinRT to leverage the move to a closed system.

That's the scenario Steam's looking at.

Thank Mithra for Steam and their Linux play.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the next gen consoles use APUs at all. And I wouldn't be surprised to see them still stick with 720p. Or maybe my expectations are just too low. Meh.

I definitely see apus and 720p in their future. Microsoft and Sony sound like they're done pushing the hardware envelope with consoles.

And why would they run better? The PS3 uses Nvidia's 7000 series DirectX 9 architecture with separate vertex and pixel shaders. 360 uses a pre-DirectX 10 architecture that sits somewhere between AMD's X1000 series and HD 2000 series. The game consoles basically ceased being architecturally similar to AMD and Nvidia's latest graphics cards basically the day they were released; they don't support DirectX 10 or later features and the PS3 technically doesn't even use DirectX 9 at all.

Move back time to when they was new. Same thing, no bonus at all.

The entire concept of the PS4/Xbox720 to use an AMD APU seems emotion based only without any real world thought.

Wii U was also rumoured to use APU. But when the day of release came, there was no APU.

really? I don't remember any talks about Wii U using an APU...
it was always an AMD GPU + IBM CPU...

I guess the memory is weak when trying to remember the failed hype rumours.

And so on and on.

There will be no APU in PS4 and Xbox720.

Oh wait, you people talk about the Audio Processing Unit? Yes it will most likely be AMD based ;)

LOL, that was so silly...
3 link, all of them have the same source...a very obscure source

actually, how the heck did you found that?

search on google for "wii U apu", and then PS4 APU or Xbox APU, you will see the difference... the rumors for either the PS4 or XB using an AMD CPU are much stronger... for the Wii U it was always the main expectation that it would use something Power PC based...

The HD7970 based APU? Ahahaa....

All the PS4 APU goes back to psx-sense.nl. The only thing stronger is more just ran with the same nonsense. Doesnt make it any better.

And for Xbox720, its designed by IBM. AMD is only delivering the GPU design. Most likely based on the same as HD8xxx will be. PPC cores for the CPU.

If they are APUs (and not necessarily all AMD), it may lead to more game developers making use of APIs like OpenCL for non-graphics tasks. I presume that there will be a unified address space and a single shared memory buffer, similar to the 360's memory layout- experience has shown that game developers find it much easier to extract performance from that sort of layout, compared to the PS3 style of lots of separate, explicitly managed memory buffers. GCN working in x86 address space, with good computational power, and no copying overhead between address spaces would make it much, much easier for GPGPU calculations. And if that becomes common in the next gen console games, we can expect similar ramifications for the desktop. It should be good for both AMD and Intel's APUs, but I wonder how well it will map to discrete graphics cards. If algorithms are written with the expectation of no copying overhead, having to deal with the PCIe bottleneck might slow things down a lot.

Plus I doubt that statement got anything to do with PS4 or Xbox720. Those consoles are also still too far out in the future.

PS4 and 720 should be out next year. These chips should be ready far, far in advance of launch.

As an aside, I'm reading Race For A New Gaming Machine at the moment, it's a very interesting book. (It's written by the chief architect of the PowerPC core at the heart of the Cell, and the Xenon.) His writing style is a bit tortured in places, but it's a fascinating story for someone like us- the way that Sony, Toshiba and IBM had this grand vision for the Cell, a chip which would revolutionise microprocessors and power the next generation of consumer electronics, PCs and game consoles. Development started in 2001, five years before the PS3 launched- that's how long a lead time there is on these things.

yep, a console as big as a 7970 is funny...

there are several rumours about the xbox/ps4 using APU...
from semiaccurate to even AMD itself given hints

Well supply links to these magical chips ? Is something like that taped out for the PC ?, Llano is using essentially a 5xxx series gpu with ddr3.
