you might be wondering why I have a thread title of R.O.C.K.

it stands for Recycled Old Computers For Kids. as a community service project (part of my schools charter) I have decided to start a rock program in my local area, giving the power of computers to people who normally could not afford them. the way we work is that we take used computer parts (Vid cards, sound cards, mobo's, monitors, hard drives, cases, powersupplys, ect ect...) and build working computers, then install the dnet client 😉 and ship um off to the people who need them.

if any of you have any parts working or not sitting in a box not doing any thing, I ask you to please PM me. if shipping costs are an issue I can probably help you cover them. we need all the parts we can get to make this project a success.

what do we do with the non working components?
They make great wall decorations 🙂 or great walls 😉. I am working with local buisnesses but I need your help too.

What about having a little blurb about the people that made the donations presented as kind-of a certificate to the little urchin?

Something like - Your monitor came from a former US Army Ranger who now deals dope in Miami...
and your case came from the Al Gore campaign...
and - your mouse was purchased new from funds donated by XXX

once we become major main stream I think the press would become involved aswell. more publicity for the project and for our major donators such as TA 😀.

Cases w/Power Supply's if possible
Monitors (local buisnesses should have some to give. I know they can be spendy to ship)
Vid Cards (cheap and old still work 🙂)
Hard Drives (2.1 gig would work fine)
Floppy Drives
CD-Roms
IDE Cables
Floppy Cables
Case Screws for every peice possible to man
power cords if ya got um.
Power Supplies
Surge Protectors
Modems
Sound Cards (not exactly priority but nice to have )
Speakers (same as sound cards)
a few NICs if possible, so we can hook the machines up to the network and update them before we send them out. bare minimum that we need is 1 PCI and 1 ISA
and of course Mainboards and Processors.

I probably missed somthing here. in any case here is a starter list

Here is what I have laying around at work:

- About 4-5 desktop cases with 486 mainboards (no processors) and power supplies. Some have some kind of RAM, others don't. Also have 5.25 floppies, no 3.25. No HDs and no cables.

- One COMPAQ case with PS, board, 166@200Mhz Pentium (OC 😉 - needs fan for cooling...) 6X CDROM, no floppy, no HD, no cables.

- Some old ISA video cards, 256 colors, at best...

- A 520MB HD.

- Misc...

All this stuff belongs to a guy I work with, but I'm pretty sure I can convince him to donate it to a good cause! Big question is, how are we going to handle the shipping?
