I saw that

I liked a lot of his work and he seemed like a cool guy. He became the quintessential voice of sergeants for a generation. I really liked "Mail Call" (Which isn't on his IMDB page for some reason even though he did like 7 seasons)

Couple of quick facts:
-He wasn't supposed to be in Full Metal jacket. He was helping interview actors as a technical advisor and made his own interview tapes to get the job
-He joined the marines due to his multiple arrests as a teen

That's definitely true to a certain extent, but Lou Gosset Jr. beat him to it in modern Hollywood.

Just watched his Mail Call: Bloopers video today on YT. Classic Ermey, and so sweet that they left his language in un-edited for the video:

I doubt he ever had to buy a beer for any bar that he may have frequented. Seemed genuinely down to Earth, and everyone had a Gunney quote to insult their friends with after Full Metal Jacket.

I saw an interview with him where he said "back in the day a judge would often give you the choice of jail or joining the service". They still do that in many places, such as -ahem- Texas. I was listening to a podcast not long ago, a story on the aircraft carrier John C. Stennis, and they interviewed a Seaman who said the same thing - he'd been in trouble for drugs or theft and was given the same choice by a judge.

"Hey Charlie, why did you sign up?"

"Robbed a convenience store."

He was the best. I used to watch Mail Call all the time. Very interesting show. He's been in a number of shows either as himself or a voice over. He did voice over work in the show Family Guy, and just recently I saw him as a minister in an old episode of the X-files.
