This is not a joke. Sad but true! here are the news:
Sega pulls out of hardware market: CONFIRMED

Sega has confirmed the death of Dreamcast at the end of March: you read that right: SEGA IS PULLING OUT OF THE HARDWARE MARKET GLOBALLY

Nikkei has just posted the news that Sega has confirmed it is to cease production of Dreamcast in March. The company has simply lost too much money over too long a period. And that's that.
Although confirmation as to the company's plans for the future has yet to be revealed, the news service reports that the machine will be marketed until the end of the year. Sega has, according to the report, five PlayStation 2 titles in the works and two for Game Boy Advance.
Dreamcast is DEAD. We'll have a full report tomorrow.

That REALLY sucks. I always liked Sega (except Saturn). I even had a CD, and a 32x unit for my Genesis. :)

Just got a DC this christmas too. Doesn't matter in the end though, cause there's enough titles out to keep me happy. I don't have tons of time anyway, plus I'm sure they'll still be making DC games for a while anyway. I hope they will atleast, cause DC rocks IMO. :)

Dreamcast is dead, long live Dreamcast. :(

Who's to say if PS2 will be all that just yet though?

Given what they did with PS. It would seem they will have their normal success in just about everything they do, but Sony needs to get these out, before the hype is over.

I'm not buying a PS2 anytime soon, that's for sure.

very interesting how sega was bought by nintendo JUST before nintendo releases the gamecube (a nice way of them drowning out their competition by purchasing it and then making it extinct)

very very clever of nintendo to do this

It's NOT a fact. Sega keeps DENYING this is true.

From Daily Radar (http://www.dailyradar.com/news/game_news_6711.html)

<< Sega Statement
January 23, 2001

Sega of America stated today that the company globally reaffirms its commitment to Dreamcast. In fact, Sega has more than 100 games worldwide coming out for the platform in the next year. It is not Sega's policy to comment on rumors and the company has not made any statement regarding ceasing manufacturing of Dreamcast or development for other videogame platforms.
>>

And:

<< A source inside Sega has categorically confirmed the continuing manufacture of Dreamcast-enabled products, although it is unlikely that they will take the form of the current white Dreamcast box. This ties in neatly with rumors that Dreamcast-enabled set-top boxes, DVD players and even a PC add-in card are in the works. So it seems that for the moment, the fate of the Dreamcast format is far from sealed. >>

Also, the Slashdot story (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=01/01/23/219219&mode=thread), EVERY story linked to inclues a qualifier stating Sega keeps denying.

CNN also has a story (http://www.cnn.com/2001/TECH/computing/01/23/sega.dreamcast/index.html) about Sega's denial.

Wired, too, says Sega denies it (http://www.wired.com/news/business/0,1367,41370,00.html)

And, Yahoo carries the story too (http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/cn/20010123/tc/sega_denies_rumor_of_dreamcast_s_demise_1.html)

Here's a C|Net print of the denial too: http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1006-200-4575165.html?tag=st.cn.1.lthd.ne)

I have to admit, though, that it's Sega of America making the denials so it could still be true, but nobody from Sega has said so yet.

Nintendo did NOT buy Sega. That was a nicely botched story from the New York Times.

Thanks for the links, Rendus. The last I heard (following the NYT hack job), the most likely partner Sega would sell to was Microsoft.

Crap, if Sega makes games for the XBox that would suck. I want that thing to fail.

No it's not, just like Rendus pointed out, and much like other people in the many other threads have pointed out. It's not fact until Sega says so, and as of this moment, they say it's not true. Yeah, it seems to be more than likely they'll be making games for other consoles, which would kick ass. The PS2 needs some good games for once, and Sega is the ones to do that for them. In my eyes, the Dreamcast does whip the PS2 at the moment, and probaly still will until Sony gets some more original games.

Here's some updated info: MSNBC Article

<< Sega told MSNBC.com it is stopping production of its Dreamcast gaming console by April because it has sufficient inventory to last to the summer. But the company would not say when ? or if ? it would restart manufacturing. Sega also told MSNBC.com it plans to announce a new device next Monday that includes Dreamcast technology, hinting that it may be some sort of television set-top box. >>

<< Sega officials told MSNBC.com that Sega will announce a new partnership with another company on Monday. A "Dreamcast-enabled product will be continued to be manufactured well beyond April of this year," he said. ?There will be an announcement on Monday of next week about a new form factor that includes Dreamcast technology inside it. A new product which is very much in line with announcements we?ve made in the past concerning set-top boxes and digital convergence devices. >>

Damn good thing we have a whole new topic devoted to this. Guess there's just no way one of the other three topics would have sufficed to reveal this shocking news in.

Hope it isn't so, but I'm still glad I have my DC. Tons of good games already out and some more on the way! :)

Ornery: Hey, if it wasn't another Sega thread, it'd just make room for another "Who here likes to fart?" thread or something...

This is truly a sad development. IMO, Sega is the best console software company in the world. They made mistakes in the past, but with the Dreamcast, they did just about everything right.

They created a piece of hardware that's easy to program, sold it for a low price, and made some great games for it. I've been playing videogames for 20 years now and can honestly say that the Dreamcast had the best software lineup after its first year of existance in videogame history.

It's a shame that Sega has to pay for its mistakes of the past (Sega CD, 32X, Saturn) by discontinuing the Dreamcast. But that's life.
