after showing this video to my dad, he posed the question:

What if one of these R/C helicopters were fitted a video camera and some sort of weapon (explosive, projectile, ect.) and used by terrorists to attack a person of great importance (self censorship for fear of big brother)? If the operator was as skilled as the dude in the video, I don't see any way the secret service would be able to protect him.

What do you think?

*note* I obviously do not condone this type of behavior, if anything. it could be used as a warning.

Link no work.
The body guards of the important person could always shoot the thing down.
You think body guards of any worth would let something like that get near a person of importance?

my only guesses would be:

"shoot the thing down" <---- not bloody likely

or "human shield/pray" <---- not very effective against explosives

Well I mean the recoil and weight of any kind of highly-accurate rifle would probably be too great to allow it to function on these light-weight RC helicopters.

An XM-8 only weighs like 6lbs. Fortunately theyr'e only in combat trials thus far.

You have alot of confidence in their shooting abilities.

That is one of the coolest fvcking things i have ever seen!! I could care less about it being used for military purposes, I just wanna watch more!

When you start to add in targetting, radio equipment to relay video/controls, payload, stronger engines to lift it.

You start talking about something that would quickly lose that kind of manuverability.

hevnsnt: i'm guessing that when the thing is upside down, it's blade are positioned such that is af it would go upwards, were it the right way up. (does that make sense?)

anyways, screw the VIPs, i want one of those!

lets disect this...

exposives would be easy shielded by a human shield, all a few of those guys would just yell incoming and pile on - they ain't getting through a few bodies.

now exposives with some shrapnel? would lose its deadly force after one body.

then we have the whole weight thing. shrapnel = hard dense metal.

I don't see this plan flying. <sic.

variable pitch, the airfoil of the blades can be adjusted (remember a helicopter rotor is nothing more than a rotating wing generating lift)

hence it takes so much lift to manuever a copter like that, add in the shrapnel to make it truly lethal and you have a very large and slow copter.

that is basically what i meant to say, but i said it the wrong way around, i think.

lemme try again: if the heli were right way up, the direction the force is generated at that moment would make the plane go downwards, thus in effect, when the plane is upside down, the plane goes up, or hovers.

is that right?

Meh... just the ammunition would weigh down that thing like a bitch, not to mention the gun. Furthermore, how long can the battery/ fuel last? That's also crucial. Throw in the fact that there is no room for lag time with such the fragile body, it's not the most practical thing.

pretty much - the rotor generates lift. that force can be directed in any direction.
