Skulltrail is Socket 771, iirc. Of course the QX9775 would be 771. Double that ouch on the price.

Skulltrail is really not interesting to me at all...even if I had unlimited money, I would not buy it.

The use of higher latency memory ends up meaning you get less performance per clock than a S775 system, and very few apps will use 8 cores.

I'd like to know, how important are socket changes. I mean at one point, one has to wonder if one component maker isn't helping out the other... are so many different sockets necessary!?!? I'd like to understand why.

man i sound like a broken record for saying this over and over.

Skulltrail is a super beefed up intel I5400 Seaburg chipset with overclocking options, and a Nvidia MCP on the south bridge to support SLI.

This is the only high end enterprise eq, which was moded by intel for gamers.

The QX9775 is a yorkfield Xeon server. The multi was unlocked, and i believe it maybe on the of the first times intel did this to a server chip.

And if you think skulltrail is a waste, next year i gaurentee NEHA will follow skulltrails footsteps for high end gaming with 2 choice in cpu's as well as the xeon line.

NEHA for servers and High end PC's will both share a LGA1366 socket. The normal consumer line will have a different socket.

So expect things to get more expensive if you want the high end machine. And expect a very big difference between the two in both price and performance.

Yes intel is discriminating next year. :T

Skulltrail may be the must have toy for the rich gamer, but until they fiqure out a way to ditch the regestered ram and it's inherint latency, and produce more than a couple of games that even have a chance to use more than 4 cores it will loose to highend single socket systems in almost all benchmarks.

doesnt avoid the fact intel is jumping on server platform for high end gaming on neha tho. :T

Nehalem.

But here's the part that has me confused - I thought Skulltrail motherboards were only available by special order directly from Intel. So what's the purpose of selling the QX9775 standalone?

Several vendors list it for purchase, don't know wether they have stock or they take your order then place a special order with Intel

Yeah, but it's the only one I know of that has bios options to change the CPU multi. And it would kinda be a shame to put and unlocked multi chip on a board that wont allow you to change it:(
