i am looking into getting the qx9770 and planned to overclock it to 4ghz for 24/7 use.i am using the thermalright 120extreme cooler with 2xnoctua nf-p12 fan.i would like to find out will the cooler be able to cool the qx9770 at 4ghz?i really am unwilling to mess with watercool as watercooling parts are extremely hard to get over here.so if the 120extreme isn't able to cool the qx9770 at 4ghz then i will not be getting the cpu.

Edit:forgot to mention that my ambient temp. are high(30-32).
currently the my cooler are able to keep the e8500 under 60c at full load@4ghz(425x9.5)

it could most likely cool it with a cooler binned chip, but with that proc its not 4ghz guranteed

i have read that the qx9650 have a max multi of 15 whereas the qx9770 doesn't really have a upper limit for multi..is that true?

Do you need more than a 15 multi? 400X10 = 4ghz. 333*12 = 3.996

9x multi is good enough even if you have decient ram and a good board.

My QX is on 10x, i dont think i would possibly need more, i went 12x, but the voltage requirement is in phase territory.

10x400 will most likely be your limit on air. Anything more will require water.

Best I can tell and a 1600MHZ FSB compared to a 1333FSB and 200Mhz. Well and $450.

With those ambients you are not going to be running at 4.0Ghz with an air cooler. You would be lucky to do it with water. Save your money and get a 9550 or 9650 and call it a day.

I have a QX9770 wth the cooling set up you quoted.
I have run it at 400X10 = 4ghz for a 26 hour test, without failure.
With an ambient of 25C the top core temp went to 65C
With an ambient of 22C the top core temp dropped to 56C

I?ve decided the 400x9 is a better option since I can reduce the voltages and the heat.
Currently I have CPU at 1.2875v, NB at 1.438v DRAM at 1.84, Vdroop enabled GTL Ref at Default. Everything else is on auto or default.

In my SOHO my ambients will go quite high so if I wanted a 24/7 at 400x10 or higher I would need to move off air cooling or buy a small office air con unit to bring the ambient down to 22.

I am going to use the power policies of Xp/Vista to throttle the CPU (idle 400xx6) so the core heat should be OK for a 24x7.

I hope this is helpful!

Dave.
