QX6700 & Overclocking

Well i bought a QX6700, but i want to overclock it to get a better performance on games, just like the QX6800...

How long a brand new QX6700 would last being always overclocked at 3.2?

I never overclocked anything before and i have no idea how to do it, where can i learn it?

(definition of Forever: much, much longer than you will keep it. Unless the performance of this CPU still amazes you 10 years from now).

This is a very good guide. A bit old, but it has everything you need to know.
But to be frank, you didn't pay over a grand for a piece of silicon, but to make your life simpler. Go into the bios, set your multiplier to 12, sit back and enjoy.
 
the reason why no one is really helping you in overclocking this thing is because well:

1. its not easy. any EE processor should not be your first oc processor. Because the supplied heatsink isnt enough. You always buy an aftermarket for a EE processor, unless you just bought it to run stock. Which would then be a total waste.

2. you havent told us anything besides your CPU.

whats your ram? whats your board? whats your power supply

you supplied nothing to us.


Also there are tons of guides written on how to overclock a C2D. Your QX is the same thing as a C2D E6700, in respect that it has 2 dies and not 1.

So just pick one and start.

Also, u cant overclock a QX on stock heat sink. Its very not healthy. And every time you keep her closeer to 70C 24/7 the shorter the life of the CPU becomes.

So start googling a ocing guide. And do some reading. Then when you at least found out what the pro's and con's to ocing is, come back and answer my questions i gave you up top, and maybe we can start from there.

Im looking to learn how to OC it before i actually buy so i can just OC when i put my hands on it

here are the other hardwares that ill get for this new computer:
asus p5n32 680i
geforce 8800 gtx 2000 mhz
2 gb ram corsair 800mhz
hd sata 400gb 7200 rpm

ill have a pre-built water cooler too, i just dont know which one ima buy
 
if you're getting a QX6700, then you would probably want an EVGA 680i SLI A1 Revision (MAKE SURE IT'S A1, NOT AR). It's one of the better boards for QuadCore OCing.
Prebuilt Water-coolers are generally just as good as a high-quality air cooler. But if you want a water-cooling kit, I would recommend a Swiftech Ultra+ GT.
And you'll probably want at least a 600W PSU.

You won't need water to reach 3.2. Just get a Tuniq tower or some other high quality cooler for around 50 bucks.

This 620 watt Corsair psu will be great for your setup for 125 bucks
