Qwest Speeds - Paying for 7mb / 768kbps..

I'm sure this topic was beating many times over but here goes.

Those are my speeds on speedtest.net, but I haven't found a consistent result. It was varied from 6-18mb depending on what server I used.

I'm from MN so I figured the best server was going to be IL. And this was the best result I found.

Details on my connection and test setup -
Actiontec Qwest DSL Router M1000

I just plugged the hard wire into my laptop ran the speedtest and my results varied but was pretty consistent with 10-15mb most of the time. I then hooked up the M1000 to the linksys wrt54g and my download rates did drop to a more consistent 6-12mb. So I know that it's causing some bottle neck within the router.

- Does this mean time to upgrade??
- Is there any other sites out there that I can test the speed other than speedtest that might offer a better result?

Any more Q's just ask.

Thanks!

Well there could be a variety of things that can give you inconsistent results like the ones you are experiencing. It could be the router, the modem, the cable line from the telephone pole to your house, the connection from your house to the ISP, etc etc etc.

The point is there are too many variables to accurately determine if the router is THE source of the problem or if there are multiple sources contributing to a single problem.

I am not sure what you mean "...this mean time to upgrade?"...upgrade your modem? upgrade your Internet connection?

To answer your final question you could try www.speakeasy.net/speedtest but that may give you a whole different set of numbers altogether...

Nah, probably looking for an excuse to buy a new Router.

I like spending money! 🙂

I'm trying to figure out why it's so inconsistent. Guess I need to play around with this more. I just want to maximize my download speed and I know there is a bottleneck just need to figure out where..

Directly hooked up to DSL modem I get blazing speeds.
Hook up the DSL modem to the WRT54G V2 (newest firmware from linksys) I get average speeds. Could flashing this increase my speeds? Doubtful.
WHY? No idea.... That's why I think I should upgrade..

Chances are your just seeing Bursting, And it will never be the same. Best way to test your connection is go download a big file from a CDN, Like akamai or something (nvidia driver works). And you should see it go real fast for the first 30 seconds or so, and it should level out around your 6Mb/s limit.
ISP's like bursting, Because it makes the webpages pop up fast. My cable will very from 18-33Mb/s and its set at 15/2.
