I know I've read this before, but I cant find it right now. How do you change your Quake 2 config file to unlock the max fps cap? I can find where to do it in Q3, but not Q2. Thanks

Try turning off Vsync. If you have your monitor at 60hz it will limit the video card to match that.

Turn off vsync in your driver control panel. Also I assume you have Windows 2000/XP? Download the nVidia refresh rate fix so your OpenGL games are set to the correct refresh rates.

any reason you want <60fps? 60 is smooth.

120 FPS is smoother.

Thanks for the input. I reloaded my vcard drivers and may have forgot to disable vsync. I'll try that.

got a source? or better yet, a demo? i dont have any that compare beyond 60 (well, it will compare 70 to 35, or 80 to 40, etc.)

The problem is that the ability to perceive the difference between framerates varies from person to person. I sure as hell can see the difference between 60 and 120. Shoot, I can easily see the difference between 80 and 100. But this is certainly not to say that anyone else can see it.

edit- I think Quake 3 would be a good demo for this, as you can tweak the maximum FPS by a setting in the console (com_maxfps). If you have this game try first setting com_maxfps to 60, then to 120, and move around after changing them back and forth.

If you can see the difference between 80 and 100 then your eyes must be one level every other human. The human eye only captures 30 to 40 images per second (Each eye). Total that adds up to 80FPS. I would suggest upping your refresh rate as high as it can go and leaving VSync on. Games look much better with VSync enabled in my opinion. I can't stand tearing. I didn't realize how much it helped until I enabled it. As long as the frames remain fairly consistent, I am happy.

oh, yeah WAY smoother. IF YOU HAVE A MONTIOR THAT REFRESHES AT 120 HZ. Since you seem to have one, would you mind telling us where you bought it?

edit: but yeah, i gotta agree that a monitor at 60 Hz is PAINFUL to look at.

type in the console "com_maxfps 0" without the quotes and it will no longer lock your fps. Quake 3 by default will not allow your system to run over 85 fps. Change it to what ever # you want but 0 tells it to let it go as high as it can without restriction.

forget it you said quake 2.

sorry

I think for Quake 2 you need to type in max_fps and then put something like 100 ( I don't think it will go higher than that but you can try).
