Aiight, so I'm all psyched up for lunch today. The uBeR coupon from Quizno's hooks me up with a sammich, chips and drink for a little over $2. Fantastic dealio. Been usin' it for a couple days now. Well, I mosey on over to the local Quizno's shop, which, as luck would have it, is owned by this Indian guy (hence all his employees are his kids/relatives etc.) Sure, it looks like nepotism, but AFAIK quality hasn't suffered and they're right up there with all the other Quizno's.

Well, as some of you may no, Indians can be very...umm...'frugal' sometimes. Hell, we're downright stingy when it comes to spending money. We flock to all the hot deals sites and normally we'll never pay top dollar for anything. Its in our nature--we're Ferengi by birth. This explains why I'm so happy to use the coupon...and this also explains why today the manager decided to REJECT ME!!! :|:|:|:|

As soon as I whip it out (the coupon), the manager looks at it and says, "we're not participating in this promotion." Now mind you, I've used the coupon thrice before at this same store, with the manager present no less. "I used it before", I say in my defense. His eyes narrow and I detect a bit of a sneer when he says "well the coupon says at participating stores only. We've decided not to participate. Only corporates [corporate-owned Quizno's] need to accept the coupon". Well this must be late-breaking news, because a coworker of mine had just used his coupon 15 MINUTES BEFORE ME!!!

And herein lies my dilemma. Coworker is white. I am Indian, like the owner. I'm sick and tired of seeing Indians in retail BEND OVER BACKWARDS to accomodate white folk, and then an Indian walks in and all they can do is look at me funny and try to get me out of there as fast as they can. WTF is this...a holdover from British Empire days? Sometimes they'll mumble "so, you're Indian? Where you from?" As soon as they realize I'm not from their particular street/village/rice paddy/caste etc. all social interaction will stop. But I don't wanna get into that. So sure, maybe the owner/manager guy thought this coupon was a complete ripoff, but he was MORE perturbed by the fact that a fellow Indian had the gall to use this coupon on him!! So now I'm done with this Quizno's (less than a minute's drive from work too!)

What really pisses me off is that the only other Quizno's nearby (close to home) is also owned by Indians! :| :( <sigh...>

EDIT: CLIFF NOTES

- /me wanted to use free sandwich with chips & drink coupon at Quizno's
- This time, coupon was rejected...store said not participating
- Store is owned by Indian people, who can be frugal/cheap/stingy
- /methinks I was rejected because I'm also Indian b/c white coworker just used the coupon before me
- /me is mad

EDIT 2: Coworker found a new Quizno's for me on Woodlawn Rd...corporate owned AND takes the coupon (and only 7-8 minutes away...not as good as 45 seconds away but not bad either!!!)

People are really set in their ways. I've had similiar encounters with people of my own race/ethnicity.

Isn't there a class system in india? Maybe your level isn't high enough to complete the persuasion check.

Lie. Say you are Indian but were born in New Zealand and studied college in Sweden. That should confuse him so he accepts your coupon ;)

My mom is Kshatriya (warrior caste--w00t!) which is pretty high up, while my dad doesn't officially have a caste (he's Jain) but I believe his ancestors were either kshatriya or merchant class.

He is Indian. The store owner and employees are Indian. They gave the white guy the deal, shafted him. And a bunch of crap saying Indians are racist. Or something.

Well whaddaya ya know a fellow Indian.

You should report them to Quizno HQ. Quality control is pretty high at Quizno's and its a bad representation of the brand. And to tick them off after you "win" keep using the coupon. Of course check your sandwiches before eating them :)

On the subject of Indian people, the Subway that isn't far from where I live was purchased by an Indian Family. Naturually I could care less but they work there themselves!!! They have totally ruined the atmosphere of Subway. The reason why is the previous owner used to hire nothing but good looking 17-22 yr old young women. ARGH. That and the fact that the girls always gave you nice big sandwichs, and these new owners don't. But I liked the "Scenery".

Damnit to hell!

Have to agree on the indian thing there.

some of my indian friends got me a cell phone for my birthday - the one gift that I pay more than they do!

Whoa! I thought I was the only one was treated a bit "differently" whenever there was an Indian or Pakistani person behind the counter.

Maybe the manager didn?t ring out your coworker? I've taken several coupons only to see my manager not take them later on that same day. If it was some kid working, who doesn?t care either way, then you probably would have gotten it. If I were you, I?d complain to corporate. While you are at it, complain to get the AC fixed in my store. Its 97 degrees in there. No joke.

IIRC (can an Indian correct me if I'm wrong), it's true. Many Indians are VERY prejudiced against their own countrymen because they have a very strict social ladder/caste system. If you're "lower" on the ladder then you're looked down upon, even if you're in a completely different country.

Surnames often represent the "duty" and thus the location/caste of Indian families, so if you come from a family of farmers, even if you come to America and become a doctor, you'll still be looked down upon.

yes that actually i've seen and its weird how the complete opposite is true for some other race.
I too work around many Indians(Tech field) and when we go out, i can tell Indians don't look too highly
upon other Indians...

however, its the opposite for Chinese. I'm chinese and whenever i'm interacting with other chinese
like in a store, restaurant, etc...the effect is more friendly, camaraderie kind...like i can tend to expect
and get freebies, deals, concessions...Chinese tend to look out for one another :)
Example: i go to a chinese restaurant in a foreign country, once the owner found out i was chinese, he
told me about the ins-and-outs, what to order, no need to tip, forget taxes...etc. Super looking out! :D

Maybe your co-worker dosen't use his coupon time and time again while you do. I understand you using the coupon occasionally but when you use it every single day it gets annoying for the manager. He dosen't need to accept the coupon.
