Thought it was a trick question at first, figured most people on this board would know what that is.

I figured it wouldn't take long, but didn't expect the 1st post to get it. I've seen plenty of hardware and built several computers but never really taken much hardware apart or worked with the innards of much in the way of electronics.

just the pucks in the middle are actually magnet. the rest is just a carrier. they're really brittle (the magnets)

Yeah the magnets are spot welded to the plate. Wish I could get them off and play with them separately. I bought a 1.6 GB HDD at a thrift store for about 4-5 bucks just to take it apart to get this. Kinda stupid I guess.

Looks kind of like a brake pad.

Yeah, that's what I was going to post, but then he said it's in the magnets from the inside of a hard drive. :(

Anyway, I didn't know that's what it looked like, but... I don't take apart expensive shit that is ruined by doing such a process. What would be the point? Wasting money? Hurray....

(I don't have old hard drives from the early 1990's)

I just posted above it was 5 bucks. Not going to take apart one of my own HDDs unless it crashed or something. I could buy neodymium magnets online but with shipping it would come to more than this anyway. Just wanted to see how strong they are.
