lol. Mark was very playful with words, and he was also a nut-case. Why he is so praised I do not know.

Just remember the rule of 3. You'll have severe cravings at 3 hours, 3 days, 3 weeks, and 3 years. But, most cigarette cravings only last maybe 30 seconds, so you'll get through it quickly enough if you keep at it.

About 3 months for me, but I broke down and bought a pack today. :(
But I only smoked 1.

Just don't do it, man. Just stop. Make up your mind that it's over. Be strong.

I stopped cold turkey 3 years ago after smoking a pack a day for 10 years.
Feel free to PM me anytime you feel like a smoke.
In fact, I propose that we make an ATOT support group for those who want to stop.

I like that idea.

Links to health sites and info. Maybe you non-smokers can lock us up in a padded room for 3 weeks.

I first started smoking 13 years ago at the age of 14. I quit cold turkey around last New Years. I had one moment of weakness 3 months after that but at that point the cigarette tasted foul in my mouth.

There are no tricks, no special formulas or meditations to quitting cigarettes. Just set your mind to it and move on with your life.

You should smoke a cigar instead. Buy a $10 cigar, don't inhale, and you won't want a cig for 3 days. That's what my friend did.

This might help: every time the urge hits, brush your teeth. You'll not only quit smoking but have very clean teeth. I quit years ago this way but as with most things, I went against the norm in that I can smoke one after a meal and not need anymore - or smoke several at a bar and then not smoke for a week. I curtail it now by only buying outrageously expensive imports.

Another thing I did was jog/run - the stuff you cough up will hopefully make you want to stop - I don't jog now though since it's not good for the knees.

The physical addiction will start to taper off after a month and psychological addiction will take 3-10 months. There are good and bad things about quitting. For example, the sense of taste will return - but then you'll want to eat more.

If successful, do yourself and the rest of the world a favor by not becoming one of those insufferable ex-smokers that tries to save all the other smokers.

The last bit of advice is to not talk about it to anyone - at least not until you're well on the way (at least past the physical part) since it's a very personal thing. It's similar to talking about a migraine - it doesn't help. Others can't stop for you and no amount of blathering about the ill effects will help.

Regs,

There's a new drug in town called Chantix. Apparently it's the shit. I've talked to a whole bunch of people who smoked for years/decades and totally just stopped because of this drug. Apparently takes the craving away, even though it isn't nicotine. I don't know, but it sounds like it's worth checking out.

Anyway, try again. It's worth it.

The physical addiction is easy to break, it's the mental addiction thats a real bitch. I know 5 people that have tried Chantix in the last six months, and all of them have gone back to smoking.

1. You have to really want to quit, more than you want anything in the world
2. You have to be vigilant, and convince yourself that you will never smoke another one EVER

I can't tell you how many times that I've seen friends and family quit for months or years only to start again in a moment of weakness. I myself quit for 2yrs once only to start again.

Good luck

I personally know some people that have great success with Chantix. I've been trying to go cold turkey on and off, and it's tough. Just hang in there, bud! The payoff will be worth it.

Never smoked, but maybe the best thing to keep busy? Exercise, talk with friends, go to movie theaters, other places where smoking is prohibited. Also, I'd suggest you get one close contact buddy to support you in your goal.

Bah. I quit cold turkey years ago after smoking for nearly 20 years. The physical addiction detox lasts about 1 week. Yes, I shook like a heroin addict. It sucks like hell, but you just have to man up and get through it (if you want it). The mental addiction lasts about 3 weeks but is much easier after that evil 1st week. Afterwards, I've never wanted to smoke again (and never have).
Don't give me this "damn cigarettes should be illigal" nonsense. You did this to yourself and you know it. And you probably would have smoked twice as much if it was illegal.

Now I've been there done that, so I can say that:

If you can't quit it's because you don't want to.

goto the airport for a few hrs. no smoking there. hang out at the bar/starbucks.

that way u cant smoke. make sure u have no cigs in your car.

now if u want to smoke, it'll take you 15+ min travel time from airport to nearest place that sells cigs.

you'll be over the weakness in that 15min (u hope), and come back to your senses

I never smoked but I don't get why it's so hard to quit, just don't do it any more. It's something in your life that you actually have control over.
Worked for me and pot, coke, acid, etc....
