Quiting a job over no facebook/myspace access

What an idiotic survey and article. Of course the numbers of people willing to quit is relatively high at 39% with 18-24 year olds, and goes down to 16% with 25-65 year olds (who the fuck come up with that sample?).

THEY'RE COLLEGE STUDENTS WITH PART TIME JOBS! And yes, they need to and will grow up

That was the 'story', it was really after getting caught by Gwen in the mailroom tag-teaming Carlos and Hugo.

Ha, silly survey. You're asking an age group where their sense of self entitlement is running most rampant. I don't ban those sites here at work since some of our media groups use them to promote their services and products but everything is monitored here. SOmething will be said if you spend hours updating your facebook blog than doing something productive, like work...

She only said the manager was being spiteful and the low pay and boredom wasn't worth the hassle.

Companies ought to start firing people for surfing "non-work related sites during their paid hours. What you do at lunch is up to you, (within the SFW standards applicable to your job)
Got time to surf teh intarweb? Get to fucking work! 😉

I pretty much agree with that except the big problem is that there are many jobs where there just isn't enough work to fill the hours especially if you are very efficient with your time. At that point, many employees are basically being paid to sit there and be readily available for the next task. So, the way I see it is that allowing these employees to surf the web will help cure them of any boredom which they cannot avoid since there is nothing productive to do. That will make them happier which will lead to better quality work when that next assignment does come in. Think of it as an investment. Of course, that "investment" shouldn't be abused either. Work before play. 😉

OMG what would u guys do if you had a job with NO internet access at all?

OH NOES!

My company just got internet access about 2 years ago. It's still only to about half the employees. It was OK before getting it, but now that it's here, life would suck without it.

Everything but no facebook. Thats a far better time eater then any other website around.

Koing

pretty stupid thing to quit over... my first 2 corporate jobs didn't have internet access at all for the departments I worked in, and we soldiered on.

i only read three websites while at work: anandtech proper (not the forums), dailytech, and autoblog. it's just news, so there's basically no way to get in trouble. very limited browsing though 🙁

no limits on browsing here, but it's understood that we get work done. if we don't well then there is a problem.

Would i quit? Hell no. Though, I don't go on myspace or facebook at work. Just digg, gmail, ATOT, and teknews.

Well, to be fair, the survey respondents said they would "considering quitting," not that they would actually quit. Hell, there are plenty of things that would make me consider leaving a job, even if only for a few seconds. The number of things that would actually make me follow through on said quitting would be substantially smaller.

Don't apply logic and reason to ATOT threads please. You ruin it that way.

I've found that you get more work done when you have no distractions. Go figure. If you have completed your work, try learning something new. It works wonders.

... says the person with ~40k posts. But it doesn't make it any less true.

My mistake; it's Friday and I temporarily forgot where I was

I learn stuff when I neff on ATOT. 😀

i've been at a client where questionable sites are not blocked by websense, but a splash page is put in front of it to warn of content and grounds for dismissal/disciplinary actions if deemed inappropriate.

that's the best. although i had a chat with the network admin there and they all say its just there for show, no one really cares about the warning and would click through the page to access the content anyway 😀

I am willing to bet 99.9% of the people who voted to quit their job over blocked websites still live at home with mom and dad and have zero financial responsibilities.

anyway if someone can't go 8 hours and can't use an aircard they should stick to the level life dealt them...no one is going to miss them.

A recent survey by IT services provider Telindus found that a whopping 39 percent of 18-to-24-year-olds would consider leaving their jobs if a Facebook ban was imposed,

My money is these guys are either not working or working on campus.
Maybe the ban is a good thing.
